[Closed] Ditched Singlespeeding after 2 years! Anyone else back to gears?

So with my new Carbon Whippet frame, decided to ditch single speed and go back to 1x9.

WOW, realised what i've been missing out on all this time.

As much as I loved the looks and simplicity, Jumped on the bike today for its first proper spin, and felt like i could ride forever! So much easier, leaving me to enjoy myself rather than struggle round in constantly the wrong gear!

Loved single speed for the while i've had it, but probably won't be going back!

So anyone else recently switched back from the middle ages and got gears back on there bike recently?

Ben

You'll be back, once you start to get the gears covered in mud, the chain jumps, etc.

๐Ÿ™‚

Although I'm having thoughts about 1x9 on one of my SS rides. Just to try it out of course - research purposes.

I constantly switch back & forth between the two, you're allowed to ride both you know...Same as you are allowed to ride rigid bikes as well as sussers,it's all ridin'....

I'm afraid we're going to have to take away your niche card. Hopefully having a more effective bike that's enjoyable to ride will make up for this terrible loss.

I'm not sure it's just a fad? I mean, I loved my single speed duster, and loved the hassle free, simple, quiet, good looking aspects as do a lot of guys.

I just enjoy being able to ride up the hill as well as down now!

I put the gears back on if I'm going to the lakes or the peak, and I usually keep them on for a week or 2 after. But when I take them off I feel better.

I resent the speed at which the geared drivetrain deteriorates too.

It'll be 810mm bars and those funny exploding gearboxes next.

Had two 29er ss's and since I've 1x9'd the one due to it being a geared frame which never worked very well as an ss with a tensioner, Ive used the other once and didn't really enjoy that. It may have been a fad that I'm over but I wont sell it just yet.

OP give it 2 more years and you'll go back.

I ride both. Variety is good.

I just like to ride both - singlespeed when it's muddy generally...

But I love my gears too - it's all good!

To be fair, if I only had one bike, it would have gears ๐Ÿ™‚

FFS, don't start saying single speeding is no good anymore, I have just spent my hard earned cash on converting mine to give it a go. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

I have been a complete SS convert for awhile then tried gears again and really liked then back and forth for a couple of years. Now relies both are good, both fun to ride.

People ride bikes with either one gear or lots of gears exclusively? Bizarre!

Get a 2nd bike, so you have a geared one AND a SS one. Done.

struggle round in constantly the wrong gear

If you coast downhill and spin uphill ... you can never be in the wrong gear ๐Ÿ™‚

nope still riding around with one gear(niche whore that iam) which considering how muddy its been over here in essex last two times i've been out hasn't been a bad choice plus it's getting me fitter after a three month lay off of riding.

Currently on 1x9 which is fine. Until my knee gets better then hopefully back to 1x1. We shall see.

Once the OP loses his single speed fitness, gears will start getting hard for him again.

I went singlespeed for a while ... but got tired of it ... for the variety of stuff i was doing, i found that there was too many times that I wanted / needed the gears.

So i went back to a geared setup ... then spent the next year collecting the bits to make a singlespeed HT back up.

Its a good balance now ... get the SS fun back to basics when i want it, but the gears for when I know i'll need em.

makes it more fun all round, can enjoy the ride now rather than get frustrated.

It's for the people who don't want to pay the Shimano tax.

Well, it looks like I may have to grow a beard and call myself Sheldon, as my first outing on my recently converted to SS bike were very good indeed. I have to say though that the type of riding I do suits, so its not for everyone, but I am converted (for the time being). ๐Ÿ˜†
