Hi im looking into road bikes that could be used for a bit of cyclocross as well, mainly for commuting but possibly a bit of weekend riding for when the weather is really crap. My current favorite is the cotic escapade. im wondering if there are any other good alternatives.

Looking in the sub £1000 region. the bike must also have disc brakes

Thanks in advance

Merlin have just released some cross/road bikes - have a look on their site.

I have the 2012 (bought in 2013 at same price) its a hoot, does both CX and road (comes with slicks as its marketed as an urban hack despite having all the clearance, angles etc of a CX). Did 3 laps of Cannock last week, a 35 mile off-road CX jaunt on Sunday, sticking slicks back on it and doing Paris Roubaix sportif and will be commuting 35 mile round trip on it in summer.

They come up small, I have a "56" and it is actually a 54 (and even says "54 C-T" on the seat tube). And the cheap "pro max" calipers are far better than they have any right to be - I budgeted for replacing them but am keeping them.

PS: as with most budget bikes the wheels are anchors - 2200gm - I spent the money I saved upgrading them (as you do 😉 ) for 1600gm V3CX Discs which, with lighter tyres, transformed it.

As per wwaswas, check Road.cc for some info on those new Merlins.

I bought an Arkose 3 with the same intentions. I stuck some slicks on for commuting. I have been more than happy with it. Its a really versatile bike that is happy off road or on.

I've just ordered a planet x london road. Got to wait 3+ weeks for it. I had a look at the Escapade but swerved it as I couldn't get my head around Sora on a £1k steel bike. Most other bikes I looked at were either CX specific or road specific, I wanted a do it all inbetween type thing.

Got a 2013 Arkrose, brilliant bike, done 4-5000 miles, mainly towpath commuting, some big 60-70 mile days out on the High Peak and Tissington trails, done 100 mile audaxes as well.

Only replaced tyres and brake pads thus far, taking it in for a proper service this weekend. Expecting much sucking of teeth in the LBS.....
