Afternoon.....
Mrs Vader has finally decided to have a propper go at the mountain bike lark. To this end she wants (after a bit of persuasion) to do a skills course. Has anyone done the dirt divas beginners course and what did you think of them?
Cheers

I've been on a few skills courses, including Dirt Divas and was not impressed. I wasn't looking for networking either. However, I do feel that some people get on well with groups and some don't.

I personally feel that you are better off spending money on a one-to-one session. More relaxed and no worrying about holding up other people or, in my case, nobody else laughing at my issues!

Have had a one-to-one with that man jedi at UK Bike Skills and Tony really does know how to get the best out of people. No patronising, no bullshit, just a sincere desire to make you a better rider. In fact, once I've had my surgery, I will be going back for him to help me regain confidence.

HTH.

Cheers for that C_G, ill pass a the mesage on. Tho I feel that my OH would probably deal better with other people there(born people watcher!), especiallay if they are also complete novices. she can ride, but hasnt been doing it for long, today was only the 5th propper outing on her mountain bike and she wants to get better.
The draw of the Jedi is strong (for both of us) but the cost atm is a bit much. Plus she seems taken withe the divas course.
Any one else?

I've heard similar comments to what c-g said above. There are cheaper courses than Jedi but ask yourself why. On my way down, I thought it was expensive. On the way back, I couldn't think of a single upgrade to my bike that ever made that much difference. I want to go again and the wife is there in a few weeks. I think he has a public day for ladies coming up soon.

I think it's easy to get sucked into the marketing bullsh*t. ๐Ÿ™„

Thing is, being a good rider does not necessarily mean that you can be a good instructor. You need to be able to get into a person's psyche, listen and understand their fears and show them that you can teach the skills that will enable them to progress.

Onzadog hits the nail on the head too.

Just to let you know that the MBSwindon courses are not run for profit. The trainers do it as volunteers. The charge is to stop time wasters who don't turn up because "it's free".

They will not be the same as 1 to 1 tuition with Jedi or someone similar, I agree. Still a good way of finding out some new things or improving your confidence.

Just for balance I've got two female friends who did the dirt divas beginners course and got a lot out of it - mainly in terms of confidence to roll obstacles, basic body position and keeping up momentum rather than dismounting when things look even a little sketchy, one on one is almost certainly going to be better but it'll partly be down to how the individual learns best and where your skills are already at.

My Mrs got lots out of dirt divas course. It's not just about the skills that are taught but also not having guys around pushing them too far too fast. I agree it's not everyone's cup of tea, but for some it's a much better environment to learn.
My Mrs went back an did the singletrack skills course. I'm very impressed with what she's learnt and more importantly she is really into mountain biking now!
