Hi,

Need to replace chain (and cogs) on a second hand fixie I picked up a while back.

How do I tell want size chain it is? I see 1/8" is common but some use 3/32" I think.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Have you got the old chain? Simplest way would be to measure that. But if you're replacing the chain, sprocket and chainring, you can go with either width - just make sure you buy everything to match.

(Actually you can run a 1/8" chain with a 3/32" sprocket and/or cog - it'll be a bit noisier as the chain can rattle around a bit, but that's the only issue. Doesn't work the other way round with narrower chain and wider cogs though).

Just go 1/8th that way your chain will always fit whatever sprocket you have. Measure the old chain but make sure there’s some slack in your set up, the chain should not be tight. Also ensure if it’s track ends on the frame that the wheel can move forward a little to get some slack to get the chain off if need be.

I was taught for a fixie spin the cranks and the hold the bike up and horizontal to the ground if it’s too loose the chain will fall off. Be very careful not too shove your fingers, or any other bit of your anatomy in the way!!!

FYI, I can recommend SJS Cycles to get your parts from, especially their Thorn single chainrings, such as this. A little expensive, but incredibly long lasting. Loads of different PCD, tooth and arm style options to choose from.
