[Closed] Derailleur won't return to smallest cog

I'm having some trouble with my SRAM X1 derailleur.  It'll go from smallest to largest cog, but coming back the other way it won't drop into the 2 smallest cogs again.

The limit screw isn't being hit so it's not that.  I've replaced the gear cable and still the exact same problem.

Some times, if I slacken the cable off completely it still won't drop into the smallest cogs!

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Bent hanger or Mech?

Without the cable attached will it drop into the 10 tooth cog??

I gave up on SRAM for years after similar issue with x9 and x0 mechs. Was a problem with the mech, and I know others who had the same problem. This was a few years ago and thought they’d solved it. Assuming you’ve cleaned the mech and lubed all the pivots etc, as it seems you’ve ruled out sticky cables, I think you have to assume it’s a problem with the mech itself. Someone else may have a better suggestion.

I had this with mates bike the other day. Was bloody infuriating.

We decided it must be the mech but he's carrying riding it for the moment as it mainly goes down hill any way!!

The spring was my thought too

The hanger and mech look straight, as far as I can see.  Slackening off the cable, it usually drops down to the 10, but not always!  Sometimes it needs a push by hand to force it back down.

I can't find anywhere online that sells just the spring, I'm hoping I won't have to buy new just for the sake of 1 spring!

Knew this would be SRAM before opening the thread.
The return spring is too weak, and they often fail like this.

The fix? Shimano.

If the B screw is not set correctly the lower cage will hit the cable guide preventing it from shifting into the smallest cog.

Other wise bent hanger or damaged mech/spring is the most common, check there is not a small rock/twig jammed in anywhere as well.

Is the return spring X1 specific? SJS & Holland Bike Shop have X0 springs (although neither are cheap and you'd be paying postage on top). If the spring is too weak by design it may not solve you problem anyway. Would another manufacturer's spring work (as the indexing and cable movement would be handled by the shifter); SJS have various shimano springs for £2.99?

Springs aren't strong enough, playing with the b-screw to move the top jockey away from the cassette helps for a while but it will require meticulous cleaning to keep it working.
