Managed to stack on my steel hardtail...How terminal is a 1cm dent in the under side of the down tube about 3" below the head tube? It's not that deep, anyone think it will fold up on me?

That's it starting to fold. Classic damage after a head on prang.

Depends on "not that deep"...I'd probably ride it but keep an eye on it, unless you are looking for an excuse for something new...

This chances are that after 3 rides you'll be asking this question:

Looks like its new frame time

That's very cynical of you ๐Ÿ˜‰ !

That was the first thing the missus said !

Nah that other thread is for an alloy frame and a crack, this is just a small dent not that deep but in a fairly naughty place. After all it IS steel.

Maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to single speed the on-one and get something new, with a bit of a less harsh back end....

You're assuming the damage was caused by the front end being smashed into something. If it was something that jumped up and hit the downtube, or any direct impact to the downtube itself then it may not be terminal. I'd say Al has it spot on. As ever. [img] [/img]
