Afternoon All,

I am a new subscriber to the forum and thought this may be an interesting inaugural contribution.

Whilst going through some old documents of my grandfathers with my mum recently, we came across his diary recording his epic cycling trip from Denmark to Africa and back again.

In brief and from what I have translated so far, the trip from 1950/1951 totalled just over 10,000km, took 156 days and journeyed through Denmark, Germany, France, Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy and Switzerland.

The detailed account of the trip which he and two of his friends decided to take on talks of, amongst other things, cycling 250km through Morocco under the cover of darkness to avoid the authorities and sharing the most magical Christmas they had ever experienced singing Christmas songs by candlelight in different languages with others they had met en-route, going days without food before having to sell their tents to raise cash to sustain themselves.

Unfortunately, it would appear that he never got around to writing up the whole trip but with some luck I will come across the remaining notes.

This prompted a few questions:

1) Would anyone be interested in reading some translated entries of the trip;
2) What differences would one face recreating the trip now; and
3) Who wants to come with me?

Jamie
