No, not a new reality TV series......

Just need to find the year (or seatpost diameter) of my wifes old GT Outpost. Bought it new back in the early 90s and its now moving onto pastures new (to become my dads allotment bike!). Currently has 25.4 seatpost in but that's far too small.
Anybody know what diameter should be in there?

I'm going to say '93 - I can't see any '92 bikes in black and in '94 they seem to re-brand them at Outpost Trail...

Might be easier the measure it though?

I would measure but top of tube has been distorted a bit by over-tightening.....

Mate at work did up his early 90's GT and it was a very odd size and not what Sheldon Brown said it should be. He has popped out, but when he gets back I will post up...

Are we dating the bike or those pale brown wingtip brogues?

Ask on retrobike.co.uk - good chance of getting an accurate answer there from an owner.

If you're stuck, your LBS will have a seat tube sizer to measure it.

Clean the post, shim it with slices of coke can until you get a good fit, grease it and do it up tight. If the top of the tube is now ovalised, you may not be able get the correct size post in anyway.

Were the v-brakes standard or were they added later? If standard it must be later than about 96? (Was that when v-brakes arrived? It certainly wasn't as early as 94? Anyway, presumably they weren't oem?)

I'll just edit this to add........ I worked in a bikeshop briefly in 2000/01 and I'm sure we had GT Outposts in that colour scheme.

My Karakorum had a U-brake and that was 91.

V-brakes were '96 range but only for XT. The lower level ones as pictured didn't come out for a couple of years.

Right, it seems that GT were being crap and still spec'ing threaded headsets in 1998

https://sydneymountainbikerescue.wordpress.com/2014/09/24/1998-gt-outpost/

So it would appear that the v-brakes are original.

Since it's 1998 though I reckon it's less likely that it'll be a really random seatpost size. Probably 26.8 or 27.2

Come on guys, look at the downtube stickers - that makes it a pre-96 IIRC. Looking at it, I suspect its more like a 93/94. I had the same crappy Altus level crank on my 94 Dawes Edge.

GT were still spec'ing threaded headsets in 2000 on this model, I'm fairly sure. I seem to remember selling them at £200?

V-brakes are a more recent upgrade from the old cantis...
Definitely not a '98.
