She's 50+ and really fit with a lovely set of lovely pins. The wheels on her bike are basic and heavy so a replacement is needed/wanted. Where from and what? Irish roads near Skerries so the wheels need to be strong, well-built and cheap. Mavic on 105 any good? Thanks a lot!

I've been riding a set of Open Pros on 105 for a few years now - no problems. Crappy Scottish roads, and I weigh somewhere just under 13 stone.

Assuming the lady in question isn't on the overly large side she would certainly get on fine with a set of Shimano factory wheels - choose your price range.

Seems Ambrosio Excellight SSCs are the current box section fave amongst the roadie community.

The most frequently recommended wheelbuilders are http://www.wheelsmith.co.uk/ and http://www.hewittbikefitting.co.uk/

I noticed Merlin are doing Shimano RS20s for about £120 a pair with their Christmas discounts - been tempted to pick up a set to upgrade my cheapo road bike.

I would also vote for 105s and Open Pros - its a classic combo for reliability esp in 36 hole three cross guise.

Riding 28c or wider tyres will sort the comfort.

Why not ask at your lbs and see what they build for local riders and start from there?

I am still a fan of traditional wheels so would go for the 105 / Open Pro option.
