So I basically don't have any idea what's good in the world of road cycling, I just know that my years old mavic askiums weight a ton (1.52kg for the front wheel+tyre) and the freehub doesn't sit straight on the axle. Time for new wheels!
What's the general opinion of pro3 hubs and DT Swiss RR1.1 SWBT (or mavic open pro) rims? I've seen some at £270 that look tempting...unless there's better anything else out there for roughly the same price?
Tbh I don't think you'd get anything of comparable quality for the same cash, they are really nice wheels and at that price a bargain.
if the quality of the hope hubs is anything like old then you`d be onto a winner ...
They might not be the absolute freeest running due to the bearing design (cup and cone is better for a hub load) but the maintainance or the lack of it is a godsend .... i have a pair of Hope Ti superlite and mono hubs on my road bike from the early 90s...still going strong !
the last wheels I had built were Pro3 on Ambrosio Excellights (28h) with DT aerospeed spokes. Good wheelset. Came in around 1600g IIRC. The hubs have been fine - the freehub is proper noisy, and the rear bearings weren't that smooth but I'd use them again.
Pro3 on OPs, in either 28 or 32, with DT comp spokes would be a good, solid setup. Personally, I tend to go for Ambrosio or OPs over DT rims, as the 1.1s are only single eyelet. Just make sure you get a good builder. I always use Paul Hewitt.
