[#2895550]

I have really screwed my thumb up. Had an off two weeks ago and bent it back way beyond normal it swelled up and the joint with my hand went purple. Anyway swellings gone down but still struggling to grip the bars with any force and completely unable to shift gears with that thumb although I can put pressure on my palm.

I'm in the Alps next Friday what can I do to make riding possible? Any ideas? Have good painkillers and anti inflamatory pills what else can be done.

When I had a knackered thumb I changed to a grip shift, Sram X0, and not looked back.

It will at least get you riding in the short-term, but other than that you should have it looked at too.

If thats what happens when you go to hospital, then no wonder the OP hasn't been! ๐Ÿ˜†

I didn't know what that was but having just looked it up that's the bit that hurts for sure. Better see what the doc says.

A good wrap of gaffer tape can help. It stops the thumb from opening out. Just round the hand, mind. Don't tape yourself to the bars (unless it's really painful).

i had a nasty fall from climbing a couple of years ago.... i had an x-ray but it didnt prove broken yet there was a hairline crack..it did hurt for a few days and went very stiff..... they decided to put a pot on it just incase.... 2 weeks later problem sorted. but i still had to wear a supporive glove for another two weeks.. ๐Ÿ˜€

hope you get it sorted one way or another for your trip..

A mate of mine fell off his bike at Gisburn and after a couple of days decided to go to hospital after speaking to a GP friend!
After xray, broken bone and now pot on his arm and no cycling for 2/3 weeks!
Good luck!

Unless your gp has xray facilities and is an expert in hand injuries, you would probably be better going to the hospital.

Plaster cast

Oh and if you go to the docs before you go to the alps and you need treatment whilst in the Alps, then there may be insurance issues as it'll be an existing condition.

Just saying like.

Left or right thumb?

I suspectright from the above posts but if it's left change to a single ring setup.

...what you'd rather be in huge amounts of pain for a trip to the Alps ? the Alps will ALWAYS be there waiting for you....
how can you possibly enjoy yourself and be able to grip whilst in the Apls and change gear ???? jesus you must have a high pain thresh hold... ๐Ÿ˜‰
it's sensible to see the doc b4 you go away....if it gets worse whilst your away-your pretty much stuffed... you may be lucky and get away with strapping it, but when you go to your docs he will only advise you to have it x-ray-ed...
the pro,s of the MTB world get lots of injurys and have to cancel trips ...its the way of the world....lol ....do let us know how you get on ....friday... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Its left so not the end of the world. I'm ok ish with pain, cancelling is not going to happen! I can ride ๐Ÿ˜‰

Probably best not to mention the limited shoulder mobility from the same crash.

Hope it works out for you.

Delayed treatment of a scaphoid fracture will significantly increase the chance of non union, avascular necrosis and early arthritis.

That sounds serious and depressing.. Happily I've no pain in my anatomical snuffbox and so its highly unlikely to be a scaphoid fracture.

Friend of mine fell off on The Slab at Gisburn on Good Friday and bent his thumb back. Apparently there's a "plate" on the back of the thumb (second bone, not the scaphoid) that's there to stop the thumb bending back. If you take it too far this breaks. He ended up in a special cast to stop the thumb bending backwards after surgery to sort it out. He's still wearing the cast to ride....

I think you're risking alot here youth. Get yourself to a hospital!!!!!!

You need the referral from your GP tho do you not? - or go to a minor injuries clinic. Its not a job for A&E at this point IMO

However do get professional advice.

MIU or A+E are good choices for self referral IMO. A+E will be busy in evenings and at weekends, weekday mornings are often quieter.

GP will have to assess and refer in writing to the Orthopods who will likely send out a routine clinic appointment. This won't be before Joolsburger goes on holiday.

A+E/MIU will be able to assess, get some imaging and probably have access to fracture or hand clinic appointments within a few days.

Injuring yourself before holidays is a right PITA.
