Got a few days off in the Spring and looking for ideas for a UK road bike tour about 250 miles long.
Done inner and outer Hebs, Cornwall, Lakes etc. So looking for ideas?
Ideally a circular tour so I can drive to the start and leave the car, or one I can drive to the start the get back to the car by train.
Ideas?
Northern Ireland? Car to a port, foot/bike onto ferry?
Inverness. Train to Kyle of Lochalsh and work your way round the crinkly bits to Tongue. Down to Lairg and the train back to Inverness.
Or - Glasgow. Train to Kyle again. Over to Skye and then back to Mallaig. Work your way to Ardnamurchan, over to Mull, Iona and then ferry back to Oban and train to Glasgow. I did this one last summer and I reckon it easily matches the Outer Hebrides.
Edit: I'm looking for ideas too. There must be some nice loops in England no one lets on about
Second one is very similar to this years inner heb tour.
Glasgow to Kyle on the train! That's one hell of a long journey.
Anywhere around ardnamurchan would be lovely to ride. Soooo quiet until you hit glenfinnan
North Wales - start in Bangor, out round the isle of Anglesey, back onto the mainland, out along the north coast of the Llyn Penisula to the westernmost tip, back along the south coast, can then return to Bangor via the cycle path to Caernarfon, or through the mountains via the Nantlle valley.
Stunning coastal scenery, beautiful beaches, mountains and castles. Riding mainly on cycle paths and quiet lanes. Highly recommended ๐
Head north from Edinburgh to Perth on the back roads, Blairgowrie, then the big climbs over Glenshee and the Lecht to Tomintoul. Lots of nice back roads to potter about on in the north east and Moray coast and get you up to 250 miles before you reach Aviemore for the train.
How about following kcr's initial suggestions in post above, then skip the Lecht climb and go east towards Alford, then cross the Cabbrach and down into Dufftown- should be re-named whiskytown. Then maybe Keith, up to Tomintoul, Grantown on Spey (some very gentle off-road on the Speyside Way old rail lines about here), Aviemore, gentle back roads to Kingussie, Newtonmore, Laggan, (option of very easy off road past Loch Pattack and Ben Alder estate), back to the rail line at Dalwhinnie. Train south or carry on, using Sustrans to Blair Atholl, Pitlochry and so on.
All good stuff - cant wait to have a look at a map when I get home
Sarn Helen, Conwy in N Wales to the S Wales coast, partly along the Roman road, and going through Snowdonia & the Brecon Beacons. Both are on rail lines.
Dales!! Sedburgh-Haltswhistle-Consett-Barnard Castle-Reeth-Buckden and back to Sedburgh. Plenty of rideable off-road bits to have a go at and very quiet lanes.
Do the 5 ferries!
You could do the C2C both ways, but different routes. Maybe Whitehaven to Tynemouth and then back over the Hadrian's [wall] cycleway. Probably work out a bit over 300 miles.
Norfolk and Sufflok along the coast - checking out all the breweries and sea food restaurants along the way
Druid-I've done some big hitting trips in Northumberland.
yorkshire dales cycle way
Northumberland and the Scottish borders, could be really good. South Wales and the beacons as well, Rik.
My trip was Harry Potter Castle to Lockerbie.
offroad tour of the yorkshire dales and north yorkshire moors.
plan it around pubs in the CAMRA handbook.
