[Closed] Cycle to work dilemma.......what to get?

The company I work for are starting the cycle to work scheme in September and they've gone for the £1000 limit with a voucher so I can get it from any participating dealer.

I've already got a 5 spot so a full suss is a no go (it won't get ridden) and a major jake cyclocross (so don't want a road bike).

Thinking of a 29er with Alfine hub on the back for winter use

I'm tempted to get a bike but what can you get for a grand thats any good?

If you've got a road bike and a full bounce toy, the obvious suggestion would be a hardtail mountain bike. Unless you're into single speeds or "odd" stuff like hat, a HT would be he logical choice. You could even look at a 29er HT, something like the Specialized Rockhopper 29 looks quite nice.

I like the idea but ultimately, I like to run as much similar kit on all my bikes as possible, that way I can always get the one I want running with a bike of tinkering time.

If you are after something with an Alfine hub, what about the Genesis IOID. Think it sneaks in under a grand?
I've just bought a Marin Rocky Ridge on the CTW scheme and can't wait!

If you had nothing already I'd say a cyclocross bike. Since you already have one I'd say get another, try a singlespeed/fixed cross bike. You could buy a stonkingly nice one for a grand.

Or if that's not your thing you're clearly missing a reasonably nice hardtail.

what, like a 29er with a Alfine hub? 🙂

I've been wondering about that too but there don't seem to be any out there.

Ken, sold an ioid last year

found that with a f/s and a roadbike just wasnt getting the use of it

the alfine hub is great but thry to get a frame with vertical dropouts and an ebb as the ioid has horiz dropouts and tensioners on the frame, complete pia when you get a flat

guy at the club had a fisher 29er with alfine and an ebb yesterday, looked quite pimp

If you can't then you need strapping into the Total Perspective Vortex without delay. 🙂

A proper road bike? Far nicer to ride than a cross bike!

problem is that you have to get an 'off the shelf' bike that one of the specified retailers sells... you can however always add some of your own money to the £1000 voucher... i think a proper road bike would be sweet... can get a carbon bike with 105 from wiggle for a 1000 squids

That trek is pretty nice looking anyway. Belt drive makes it interesting too. Got one in Birmingham city cycles

Im the same situation, dont know what to get but considering the Boardman Pro hardtail and putting on sum slicks. Pretty nice spec for the money Looks quite good for just under a G from Halfords, or may opt for the Spesh Allez Elite....
