Hey,

I'm staying in Keswick for a week and will only have my CX bike with me. Can anyone recommend any routes? I went to Whinlatter last time and amused MTBers.

Cheers,

Mick

Back of Skiddaw loop from Threlkeld. Minimal tech (come up the BW on the east side of the stream, not via Lonscale Fell).

Quite a few of the routes in the Vertebrate Graphics guidebook are doable on a crosser.

The Lonscale Fell loop is nice.
If you're willing to drive a bit of ride out the Troutbeck and Jenkin Crag route is also pretty good.

Why did you take such a wildly on inappropriate bike?

"wildly inappropriate bike?"

I need it for an event I am doing while I am there and only have room for one bike.

Have you never been mountain biking on a drop bar bike? I recommend it, it has an extremely high grin factor.

lanes out to st johns in the vale, then old coach road
left to cross a66 at troutbeck
up through mungrisedale to mosedale, turn left up mosedale
up Cumbria way to skiddaw house, then left down to threlkeld if you are not brave, or lonscale if you have big un's.
down side of latrigg to Keswick.

I have done this ride on my tourer a couple of times. all rideable on a cx bike

only bit I pushed was up the first incline from where the track splits, and the obvious big rocky bit where you die if you fall left.............. ;o)

There's no such thing as being underbiked only underskilled. 😉

You rode a CX bike UP the Cumbria Way from Mosedale to Skiddaw House!? You must be a riding god.

no, deffo not.

it climbs 200 meters in about 8km. it isn't that hard or steep. it was also very dry if I remember.

Yup, CX riding definitely makes you look for a good line.

IMHO it's not a proper CX ride unless you have to shoulder the bike at some point. 🙂

What about the first section down from Skiddaw House - you rode up that? And the two lose bits by the stream crossings?

Alternatively you can do Whitless Pike on one.

1.50 in.

One of Parkedtigers mates I think. Whoever he is.... respect.

the obvious big rocky bit where you die if you fall left

I once fell off and ended up sat on the edge holding my bars with one hand with the bike over the edge...never tried again!!

from keswick quick blast to grange on road then down other side of lake to manesty and onto the terrace along side of catbells, down to braithwaite and climb up fire roads to whinlatter visitor centre, carry on climb over top of whinlatter horsebox junction on teh fireorads and then long descent to spout force car park, right onto road and down the hairpin, at bottom of hairpin shoulder bike for steep climb staight up the treeline to top of kirk fell, from the top turn right and ride over broom fell to lords seat. descent back into forest and take the track back to horse box junction or take a left after about 500m inthe forest and take that track to fireroad, both will land you back at visitor centre. from VS take the bridleway down to thronthwaite and then back along to keswick.
