We'll be riding this route this weekend, in a part of the world none of us has really ridden in before. With the weather on the turn (thunderstorms forecast!) has anyone got any advice on what we're in for? Is most of the off-road stuff singletrack, fire road, paved, muddy? Any advice really appreciated.
(Any phonetic guides to how to pronounce some local place names also very much appreciated!)
Interested - whats the route? Link?
It's possibly not as clear on the new forum, the word "this" is a link in the OP.
It's this one: http://www.mbr.co.uk/routes/wales/mountain-bike-route-cwm-carn-to-afan-276853
I'd expect to get pretty knackered. That's a long way in a very hilly part of the country.
Interesting. I'm pinching that to add to the list 😀 . And yeah, looks epic, hilly and knackering. Probably muddy on wet days.
Let us know how it goes on 😀
You doing both trail centres as well?
That's a mother intercoursing lot of climbing 😱 as it's an A - B route, how does the ascent change depending on directuon? You doing it in one day? The 140km is doable, it's the 5700m of ascent that'd intimidate me. Assos chamois cream, that's all I can add. Enjoy & let us know how it goes 👊
Epic route.
Only ridden a small part of it so can't comment on trails but it should be pretty dry unless the rain gets heavier today.
Best of luck... Some steep valleys to climb out of.
Looks good that. Make sure you ride the little trail centre in Blaengarw as well on the way through!
That is a mahoosive day out. I'm all up for a big day ride but given the amount of mud and bog you normally have to deal with on any Welsh mountain I'm out.
Can't actually scroll the page to look at it due to the ads...
It's impossible to scroll to the bottom of the page, it keeps adding adverts! Wow.
Edit: meant to say: BIG day out, hope you've got somewhere comfy to sleep at the end.
I probably should have mentioned we're doing it over 3 days 😁 it's still been pretty epic but as the route is a few years old much of the singletrack has overgrown. I probably wouldn't recommend it without a decent amount of local knowledge to find some alternative routes in the middle part between Abergavenny and Treharris.
That route will mostly be fire roads, but there are some amazing natural technical downs in each valley. Have a look on strava.
