While the weather's good and the trails are still dry(ish) I'm trying to organise a day out at Cwm Carn for myself and a few friends. The problem is that I can only get away on a Tuesday when the uplift service isn't running. Whilst I wouldn't normally baulk at a climb, I've ridden the first climb once and there's no escaping the fact that it is quite draggy and time consuming. The main selling point for the guys I'd be going with is NOT having to do much climbing ie, a day of 'holiday biking'.

So can anyone tell me if the road to the top car park is open for me to take my van up and we'll we take turns at driving it back down?
Is there a toll every time or anything else to get in the way?

You can't do it. I am not sure if the access road is even open on those days, but if it is, they won't let you shuttle up and down in your own vehicle. You may be able to try but if you get caught they will be none too pleased.

As above, they don't allow private uplifts 🙁

If you want to do a private uplift without any problems, then I think you can do it at Forest of Dean using public roads.

What about Darran road (the one you can see just after the short steep concrete climb on the XC course)

Go to Forest of Dean and do the uplift with Flyup Downhill instead. They run on Tuesdays.

Loads of great trails, more variety than Cwmcarn and a brilliant service from Simon (I think), the guy who runs it.

As said above, no private uplifts are allowed. Mainly thanks to people driving like ****ts. Now they just do it in the car park. Darran Road is a track. You'd never get a van up it.

Thanks for the info folks. I'll look into Flyup at the FoD. Can anyone tell me how the trails hold up if we're unlucky with the weather as I'm assuming the trails there are not purpose built.
Once again, I'm not trying to be a mincer but if we're going to ride through axle deep filth we can do that at home on rigid singlespeeds.

FOD has had a lot of work done on it recently, but I'm still not sure how well it rides in the wet. I've only ridden in the bone dry summer and it's blindingly good when it's dry. Likely to be more challenging in the wet, but I reckon you'd still have a lot of fun.

I went down to FOD for the uplift last week, it had rained a lot the day and night before (I slept in the van in the car park)and the trails had the odd puddle but generally held up very well.
