MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
I'm looking for some recommendations for a frame builder for a road racing frame. I've been looking at Bob Jackson, Nimbus, Dave Yates, anyone had good experience of these guys or any others. Quality etc. is more important than price (just completed first year teaching, golden handshake is being spent on a new road bike and I don't really want carbon.)
If you fancy titanium try Enigma....
2nd Enigma - they do steel too now, I believe.
or Burls
indy fab.
rourke. or enigma.
they use oversize modern steels like columbus spirit and deda zero replica.
these tigged or fillet brazed frames are much lighter and stiffer (yet still comfortable) than traditional lugged frames with their small tube diameters and a fair bit lighter too. years of experience of race frame building.
or look at a pegoretti if your budget will stretch to a duende or marcelo, custom spirit tubeset and built by one of the best. i wouldn't swap mine for anything. (except another one)
Go on the frame building course (Dave Yates?), you'd get a frame and the knowlage to make another if you fancied it as a hobby. Arround £1100 IIRC?
Seriously tempted as I realy want to learn how to braze.
cliff shrubb still builds a few frames. He has built frames for TdF riders and landspeed record bikes.
My track bike is so beautiful that I've had it clear lacquered to show off the quality:

A friend rides a Pegoretti (Luigino). Beautiful.
Another friend rides a Rourke 953 as his race bike. Some teething troubles at first, but light, stiff and fast as hell.
Another friend rides a Steve Goff audax/light tourer. Nice quality frame - not fancy but really well finished.
For racing, I'd have the Rourke.
I've been thinking of an Enigma for a custom road frame.
cyclefit in London leading onto a Serotta? I've got one of their custom Glider GPM carbon frames made to their dimensions and design by Viner in Italy. It's lush, but 2nd best compared to a serotta.
So, I'm looking at the Rourke 853/953. I'm familliar with 853 but what's 953 like, strength, weight, rigidity and shock absorbtion.
trust the experience of your builder, Brian or his son (who does the actual building) they will suggest a tubeset to suit you and the riding you do they know more about how the different tubesets build up than anyone on here.
don't discount the deda tubesets either. they shaped round to triangular stays are lovely to look at but still stiff without being harsh.
a friend has a deda framed race bike another friend is about to order a 953 frame. (they both work for importers/didtributors/manufacturers of well respected mid-high range carbon frames but choose to ride steel rourkes)
A friend of mine builds awesome frames - He's returning to Woodrups in Leeds to work next month... Check out his Bi-Laminate frames:
