I know this is a regular topic and bikes need a leg over for fit and feel but...

What is the current road bike for £1000 or less? Is it still between the Defy 1, peloton race or the planet x pro for 2014?

Any one got any other bikes to suggest?

The bike will be used for a genuine commute of 20+ each way...

Thanks you in advance

I think they've upped the price of the pro carbon ultegra by a couple of hundred pounds so it's now over the C2W limit. Although I think there's an SRAM version that's just in the budget.

I got a Giant Defy Composite 3 on the bike scheme. Was a bit naughty as it was a discounted 2013 model and a smudge over the limit, but the bike shop seemed happy to still put it through under C2W and I paid the difference and the 12% shop charge in cash. Some shops will do that, some won't. It's a fantastic bike, I'm really pleased with it.

Peloton Race

Just taken delivery of one of these on C2W and am quite pleased with it. The problem is (imo) that you have to compromise something for a grand, if these scheme was 2K then you could get something really decent.

We are on Halfords scheme so could not get a Planet X (pro carbon with Ultegra at a grand is amazing value).

The Peloton was a decent bike with 105 and a reasonable set of wheels.

Rides well and looks nice (black and red version).

Ask nicely and Giant shops will take an additional top up so you can exceed the limit. My Defy SL was topped up from a £3000 voucher to £3750. Off to ride it to work now!

I have the PX that I got for £999.99 on Cyclescheme

I paid separately for an upgrade on the tyres and the £100 fee (that Cyclescheme charges PX I think)

Only ridden it once but it is great, see my other post on Planet X because I had great service

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replies...

Quick question, is the administration fee compulsory across all shops or is it just some. I understand that it cost the shop to run the scheme. Spec wise the pro carbon wins hands down but there is a 10% fee and this pushes it into money saving of the scheme.

what I like about the Peloton Race is the wheels/tyres and on this budget, rotational weight and stiffness would be what holds most bikes back.

Dealers will all be charged 10% the value of the voucher in admin fees, whether they pass that on to you will vary.

Dunno about the cycle to work side of it as my firm doesn't do it but I have just ordered a Peloton Race (40th birthday present from me to me).
Was tempted by the Defy but the Tektros aren't supposed to be anything like as good as the 105s, the wheels aren't that great and the chainset is probably ok but I like the full 105 groupset on the Cube, cassette is downgraded on the Giant too. The Cube also doesn't have a press fit BB which is a plus in my book. The mavic wheels and tyres should keep a recreational cyclist like me going for a few years.
I do like the look of the Giant in blue and it has a carbon seatpost which is something I will consider for the Cube, from the reviews the Giant sounds to be a bit comfier but as my only other bike is my Turner Sultan I suspect road bike differences in comfort are going to be marginal. No point worrying about aesthetics anyway when you've got a 64cm sportive bike on order! I went for the white/red/blue, showed a photo to the missus and she said "it looks French." Gah!
That was my decision making process, hope it helps
