Currently got a set of Hope hoop 29er wheels with Crest rims. I've had no real problems with them, but at times can feel a bit flexy when being pushed hard. Just wondered if anyone tried these and the Arch ex and if the arches are noticeably stiffer. The weight still seems not too bad so I could still use them for racing on,but a bit more robust for trail duties.
Yep, I've ridden both (oh, and yes, I'm talking about the 29er version). I originally had the Crests on my hardtail and found that around trail centres, they were absolutely fine, even with some quite aggressive cornering etc. However, on some of the more technical local trails (Dark Peak), I found them quite flexy.
In the end, I had some Arch EX with Rev spokes built up by Just Riding Along, and they are much better than the Crests. The Arch EX seem a perfect balance between stiffness, weight and comfort on the hardtail; I tried 'em on my FS and the difference in stiffness between the OE Roval wheels was less noticeable. I've now got Easton Havens on the FS and they are noticeably stiffer than the Arch EX - but I suspect the Havens would feel pretty unforgiving on a hardtail.
FWIW, I weigh 90kg in full riding gear.
