[Closed] Crest rims and CX tyres

[#3842029]

I've been planning to build up a set of CX wheels using Stans crest rims - I like the idea of a wider profile cx setup and tubeless specific rims rather than a rubber sealing strip which has been a bit hit and miss recently.

Some googling (including links to here) produces highly conflicting results - some say it works perfectly, others say that people couldn't fit any cx tyres on them as they were way too tight.

So, anyone with real world experience recently?

Always an option but £20 a wheel more and doesn't offer the wider profile.

I run Racing Ralphs CX on Crest at 55psi, they are fine easy to fit, no issues, been running them for a few months, with just sealant and yellow tape on Crest.
Initially I had them on at 80 PSI, ran okay for a day, then exploded on a train journey, not a good one cleaning up a carriage covered in latex.
Guess the pressure needs to be in line with the rims specification.

I always reckon that if you don't swear (or at least come very close to swearing) when fitting tyres tubeless that they're probably not tight enough 🙂

I looked into this recently and ended up getting a Velocity A23 from JRA (who built a great wheel) and it is a tubeless dream with a rim strip.

Works with all tyres (apparently Crests don't play with some) and it's wider than an Open Pro.

I tried and failed, miserably! Couldn't get 35 or even 38mm cx tyres on for love or money. Not something I would want to be struggling with at the road or trail side. Reconsider if I were you, ultimately Crest rims are designed for mountain bike tyres. I ended up getting some Mavic A317 rims on Hope Pro II's built up by Matt at 18bikes.

Trevor.
