The front of my bike is making an annoying creaking noise when compressing the forks and during braking! I have re greased the headset and done all the usual problem solving eliminating, and still cant get it resolved. It is a Cove steel frame with Marzzochi XC 600 forks. I think its either the headset cups in the frame, steerer in the fork crown or stanchions in the fork crown. Is there anyway to stop it?

New bike? That's what everyone else on here would do.

it it's any of the last three you list I'd get it looked at - none of those thigns should be loose enough to creak - not without causing catastrophic damage.

other things to check;

fork seals - maybe dry if it's not been used much.
brake/gear cable outers on frame.

I had a similar problem on mine, thought it was steerer/stem interface but replaced the headset and problem solved.

Defo not the brake/gear cables or seals. There is no fractures or visible play in any of the parts that I mentioned, think I will replace the headset and take it from there.

my front end creak turned out to be the alum inium bars flexing, looked under neath and there were some serious indications of stress and metal fatigue!

other bits that have caused problems on my bikes;
grit in the steerer/stem/bars and headset/frame interfaces

To solve either of those dissasemble, clean thoroughly, and reassemble with a small ammout of grease (helps the parts tighten up smoothly rather than building up strain in certain areas, which subsequently tries to resolve itself and creaks)

ovalised headtube?

frame not faced properly before the headset was fitted?

Still not got the f@*king thing fixed! I have checked the stem bar plate and steerer interface, had the headset cups removed and regreased, the headtube was faced before headset was fitted. I am pretty sure its the stanchions crown assembly. Emailed Windwave the Marzocchi distributors as the forks are still under warranty and waiting to hear beck from them, hopefully they will be quicker that the last time I had to deal with them (5 weeks)!
