[#4001820]

Hi guys,

I'm a novice at maintenance when it comes to bikes and I have a bit of a bike issue!

One of the threads for one of my pedals has completely de-threaded to the extent my pedal fell out while at Gisburn the other week. Just wondering what bits I ned to replace to fix this problem. I presume I need a new crank for that side but i'm unsure what type I need and whether its that actually that "simple"!

I have this extremely up to date and high tech bike! 🙂

Thanks in advance for any help.

It may be cheaper to buy a complete crankset than just one arm.

What sort of state are the crank rings and bottom bracket bearings in?

you may be able to re thread putting the pedal on from the other side - I did this once when a pedal fell off
You can also get it helicoiled but a new crank arm will also fix it
TBH you can use any appropriate crank arm as long as it is the same length and octalink
It is that simple

If it is the chainset side you may be as well getting a new crank set tbh

It's all in relatively good nick apart from the lack of thread for the pedal! 🙂

Whats the cheapest crank set you can recommend which isn't made out of cheese? 🙂 Its on the chainset side btw .

Cheers

this is probably a reasonable bet;

although for £20 more (price of a BB really)

they'd sell you this which includes a new BB and is probably generally betterer;

Shimano Deore is great. You'll probably need a new bottom bracket (HTII to replace octalink) but that's just £10-£20.

Can that Bb shell take a ht2 bb? If so, I'd say get a 2nd hand deore/SLX crank from the classifieds.

Get one of these for £65 new with warranty.

http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/shimano-fc-t661-lx-triple-chainset-44-32-22t-170mm-id49056.html

Mine is 908g, same as SLX Triple.
Came with BB70 XT external BB for 68+73mm shells.
Came without chainguard.

Bargain.

Before you decide to change to a Hollowtech II outboard bearing bottom bracket, be advised you can kiss goodbye to bottom brackets bearings lasting umpteen years, and the Q factor (how far apart the cranks arm are) is increased somewhat.
