[#5660748]

I am quite prepared to accept it was my fault. Had a big OTB this morning and discovered the below damage. The stem has been fitted for 3 years, carbon bars. Over-tightening? I did follow the recommended torque limits, and the bar is undamaged. Before I approach Hope (bought a like for like replacement already), any input would be appreciated. Thnx.

So you broke your stem, what's the matter with your headset? (face plate is a consumable part just buy a new one)

Regardless of replacement etc. They might be keen to see it for some post mortem work.

3 years old and damaged in a crash, I'm not sure you should want or expect recompense from Hope.

I'm not seeking compo, I've bought a new one. Just asking for advice, so that I don't over tighten again, if that is the cause.

The torque settings are printed on the Hope stems so follow them and you wont over-tighten.

Thomson treat their face plates as consumable.

It's difficult to tell from the pics but I'd look for signs that cracks were already there and have propogated following the crash - anywhere there's any corrosion inside the crack would show it's not new.

Post it back to Hope with one of their returns forms and i suspect a replacement one will appear in the post to you (thats what happened with mine earlier this year)

I'd say that you'd probably overtightened the clamp bolts. Although there are some impact mark at the top of the Hope logo in the middle (result of the crash?).
A torque wrench would be a good investment I think.

You either did or you didn't?

I think the torque for the bolts is 5nm which isn't very tight.

I think I'd be pretty happy if the bars survived and the faceplate cracked rather than the other way around!

Thnx for the input. Damage is new, from the crash. As someone pointed out, disposable and glad the bars are ok. I'll send it to Hope with no expectation, and no quibble. I used the recommended torque and a torque wrench when I fitted it.
