We will be in touch
Hi forum
if you have read any of my recent posts you would know im in the process of building a prophet, for my first full suss build.
With the lower bb,and an e type front mech I was considering going double and bash. What is it I need to do, excuse me I'm a general noob, I have a 2012 xt triple 10 spd.will I just remove big ring and replace with guard? Will all the bolts fit? Will I be grinding raised bolts of and the like, is it an easy process? Sorry for any really dumb questions, I'm learning more and more from you guys every day.
Thanks
It's more or less a straight swap so the bolts will be fine.
Will the bash retain the chain or will I need a chain device?
Double and bash with a blackspire stinger or some other kind of bottom roller is usually the preferred setup.
You only need a chain device on a single set up.
If you want one you could always buy a biconical if you're worried about dropping a chain.
If you've got a clutch mech you shouldn't need one but it all depends on where and how hard you're going to ride.
I think you can get BB fitted chain guide that works for doubles but I'm not sure.
Edit: 2 split links in that chain! is that allowed? 😯
I have an SLX triple converted to double and bash, and haven't noticed the chain coming off over the bigger ring although i do have a 36T ring now.
Something i pondered yesterday though, i aim to use all of the cassette whilst in the 36T ring yet the chain line from big sprocket to big ring is quite marked. As I'm not using an outside 44T ring, is it advisable/possible to take one of the plastic spacer rings from the External BB set up and bring the chainset inboard by 2.5mm and potentially improve the chainline?

If there's clearance for your crank arm against the chain stay, there's no reason not too.
Can I use any bash guard? Are they all a standard fit?
Yes, most are. Check that it's 104 BCD 4 bolt and it'll be fine.
Check BBG bashguards from Americashire. Well cheap, very nice and pretty colours.
Muddydwarf, the 36t ring is in the same place the middle would have been in a standard triple. There's no reason why the chainline would suffer, and moving it all inboard 2.5mm will mean a worse chainline on more of the cassette when you're in the granny, so it would (in my opinion) be a retrograde step.
Depending on what bash guard you have you may need different bolts. A plastic bash will generally be thicker than a chainring so you need longer bolts, an aluminium one (Hope, Straitline) is thinner so would go straight on. Most bash guards will be 104 bcd so should be fine, just make sure it's bigger than your middle chainring.
And check whether the bolts come with the Bash. I think they do with E Thirteen for example.
I got a BBG superlight and it needs washers/spacers on standard SLX and XT bolts.
If you're just trying it out,I've got a Blackspire Ring God 36t bash like this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=5357 in black, you can have for £10 posted, not had much use,I'll include the bolts too,I'm too jeycore to manage without 3x9.

I cant believe the price of these things! Its a round piece of plastic, with four holes in it.I may start a new trend, I'm gonna buy a cheap as chips slx bash and get my air brushing mate to give it a pimping bespoke makeover.would anyone else buy such a thing? Or is it all about the branding?
