2 x 2.1 folders for £29 on ebay
On-one are doing them for 9.99 each at the moment.
are they folding? i bought some of their mountain kings before and they appeared to be made of plastic. Anyone knwo what compound the on-one tyres are?
loved the speed kings, light and grippy, especially the black chilli compound, but will wear out FAST !!!
Black chilli are the expensive ones? They will wear because of a softer compound?
Are the normal speed kings about 60-70a?
I like my Speed King 2.3 folders. A mate has the 2.1 version and they are very narrow.
Yeah good in both 26" and 700c.
Got the 35mm 700c ones on the CX and they puncture at an alarming rate, mate of mine has exactly the same problem...
Just goes to show. Did a whole cross season on mine and now there on my training bike and never a single puncture. Run mine at 55psi.
have chilli 2.3 supersonic folding version...not so clever in wet, tubeless best way forward to avoid alot of punctures and do leak thru side walls as incredibly thin...draggy on owt hard..all IMHO of course 🙂
Used the 2.1's at Mountain Mayhem last year in the gloop and they were great.. they are now on my winter singlespeed and they are great.
My speed kings (which came on my P7) punctured all the time, maybe down to my not-so-smooth riding but don't have the same problem with other tyres.
er NO! worst bike sneakers ever bought! two rides then consigned to the shed!
I've been using the Supersonics for a while now and have found then an excellent general purpose tyre. I've ordered a couple of sets of the cheap ones from On-One as well.
They are aimed at the race market aren't they?
Fast, light and fairly grippy but puncture prone.
Simple as:)
The 700c versions wear out in less time than it takes to read this thread!
Got a bit sick of the 'ping! ting! ding! ping!' noise as they pick up stones and release them in the direction of the downtube.
For me light fast rolling for dry use only. NO puncture issue. Put some air in them
Conti tyres do need to be run at higher pressures than some people think tyres should be. I run mine at 35 to 40 psi and they work great. I know a fella who thinks Mountain Kings are the devils tyre but he was running them at around 15 psi.
Terrible tyres I would,nt even waste energy throwing them over a lampost, puncture tastic shite in mud and rip very easily.
Rubber Queen UST man now
On the limit there. I use 35-45 so the tube isn't maxed out and won't rotate.
I use 50psi on the 26" supersonics.
bought some so here goes 😉
I've found them to be a great all round tyre & not punctured them anymore than any other tyre. They are fine in the wet & dry, so long as you aren't going through real deep gloop.
I've found they don't have much grip on gravelly hardpack surfaces, but they slide quite predictably.
Main problem I have is getting them on & off rims.
At the end of the day all these tyres will be just fine. Some of you make out like the manufacturer has purposely made a tyre that'll puncture every outing.
I'm sure most of us have had a bad run with certain tyres, Hutchinson for me, Python I think. And my mate wrote off two brand new Nobby Nics UST in a week just doing XC in Wendover.
I had a great run with SKs on my MTB and they were superb in cross, based on the fact they kept me upright when others were on the floor.
I've got Racing Ralphs on one bike and much prefer the Speek Kings in the wet.
I think people get punctures on them primarily because they run them at pressures which are much lower than Conti recommend.
Have used em for 3 years really like there grip on most stuff. Would recommend them for tubless.
I had a folding 2.3 on for one ride, in Autumn, on the front. After several "will i stop" moments I took it off and haven't used it since.
I think in bone dry and hardpack stuff it'd be amazing, and very quick. I'm keeping it in the hope that one day, it might be dry. One day...
I've just received 2 sets of the £9.99 Speed King folders that On-One are doing. I'm hoping they'll be just as good as the Supersonics.
Epic steve they wont be ..sorry mate the compound is just too hard...take it steady on wet slabs!
No wet slabs where I normally ride - be interesting to see how they are on wet roots though as I've plenty of those!
Got some armour you can borrow!...um..the one thing they hate more than wet slabs are roots...sorry...use my set once/twice a year for the Dyfi and Marin rough ride...scariness is offset by the way the eat up (nibble up at my speed TBH) those long climbs
They can't be any worse on wet roots than the Larsen TT's currently fitted to my Soul. I'll be changing swapping those for a set of the Speed Kings tonight and will see how I get on.
So whytetrash the bottom line is they are fast but really scary, sounds good to me ! 😉 Mind you I have just bagged some 2.1 exception crossmarks for similar XC duties, which are according to some pretty scary too, so will see you in A & E epic steve.
Glad I saw your posting though, I nearly plumped for some Larsens for early season events !
I quite like the Larsens, but when I was out on Saturday it was noticeable how little grip they had on wet roots. I'd been down the same trail a couple of days earlier on another bike - it has Specialized Storm Controls fitted and they were much better.
