Confused about forks!

I'm trying to replace the fork on my bike. It's a fairly old secondhand Bergamont Revox 5 with Suntour XCM ATB coil forks. The advertised travel is 100mm.

I've bought some Suntour Epixon air forks also with 100mm travel.

However i'm noticing the measurements on the old forks are quite different to the new. The axle to crown measurement on the old fork is around 515mm on the new it's 494mm.

The length of the exposed stanchions on the old forks is exactly 120mm, i'm trying to work out if they've been altered in some fashion to extended the travel and whether or not I should do the same with the new forks to keep the geometry the same.

Sounds like you've got a 120mm fork in there - I don't think those old coil forks are travel adjustable so they have been fitted like that.

If you fit the new forks straight on then you will likely feel the difference - even if the bike is intended for 100mm you've been using it at 120mm and to me at least a 20mm drop would be very noticeable. I think those Epixon air forks are internally adjustable so in your shoes I would choose to change the travel on the new forks to 120mm.

Cheers. Yes from the digging round I've done it does feel like the old forks must be now 120mm but they are the stock colours so thinking perhaps the previous owner somehow did manage to adjust them?

If so has the bike been running on the "wrong" geometry the entire time i have had it? I've never really had a problem with it tbh and i guess i'm used to it now.

Just can't decide whether to jump straight to 120mm on the new fork to get the A2C measurement to match or try it as is on 100mm. Mainly concerned about getting something wrong and knackering the frame. If it's a case pick which you prefer i'll try both.

I don't think you can get this wrong. Just put the 100s on then ride around a bit. It will be either better (win!) or worse (adjust new forks up to 120).
