I've got a shimano slx mech (shadow rd) sitting in a box (don't ask why). Is it worth taking the deore mech off my bike and putting the slx on?
Q - Which wins in a fight?

No. Ride with the Deore till its broken or too shagged out to work anymore, then unearth your pristine unused SLX and ride that into the ground.
The Whole process should take years and save you a little...

Better still, take the mechs off altogether! Failing that, the suggestion above is correct. SLX is good quality gear, but so is Deore; functionally, they'll be pretty much indistinguishable.
