All,
I have taken an interest in a pair of Mavic SL MTB wheels.
They come without a cassette but are Shimano 10 speed compatible. Can I put my existing Shimano cassette onto the freehub or do I need to buy a Mavic cassette which is Shimano compatible ?

It'll be fine. Mavic don't make MTB cassettes. Designed for SRAM or Shimano.
