[#9848137]

Evening! I just started a new job today and was planning on riding to the bike to the train station and then from the station at the far end to the office. It's just under a mile at either end so not really far enough to justify wearing proper cycling clothing. So I'm looking for some trousers that will have enough stretch and give to allow for nonrestrictive cycling, but will also look smart enough for working in a smart-casual office.

All the commuter trousers I've seen reviewed via google seem to be a bit pricey. I was thinking of sub £50 for a pair. Anyone got any recommendations?

Normal trousers and some trouser clips to stop the bottoms catching in the chain are all you need.

Sorry, meant to add, that's how I've been doing my two mile each way commute in suit trousers for the last 18 months.

Enduro Urban Stretch:

Or just regular trousers. It's only a mile at a time!

Another good tip is Wickens and Soderstrom chain lube so that your chain stays nice and clean

4 miles a day?

Trousers. Any. Trouserclip. Ride.

Cheap pair of waterproofs for the rubbish days.

I've got a pair of Endura ones, which are great, but I also just do stretch chinos or jeans too. Only problem is the crotches tend to wear through pretty quickly, but they're cheap. About 1 pair a year seems to be average for me. The Enduras are 2 or 3 years old now and only really starting to pill, so maybe worth the extra.

I bought some Swrve trousers in their black Friday sale, and I'm really happy with them. Robust, well made and stretchy in all the right places.

Not cheap though even when on sale, but I reckon it was money well spent.

For that amount of cycling any trousers will work! Definitely recommend using a trouser clip or ankle band

Failing that roll the trouser leg up or tuck them in your socks. I ruined a pair of suit trousers moving my bike 100m - trouser leg got caught in the chainring

More importantly, make sure you have mudguards!

I go with some chinoesque trousers from H&M, they last about 9 months before the crotch goes.

Full length mudguards take the edge off.

These trouser clips are nice. http://baileyaccessories.co.uk

Or get a full chain guard.

Or for a mile each way, I would just use a scooter...

Hardly worth taking a bike for a 15 minute walk to be honest, but as above you'll be on the bike for probably about 5 minutes max so any trousers will do.

I'd hope so for fourteen quid.

Meanwhile, perfectly suitable for £1.90:

£14 for Cycle clips! I think I've now seen the ultimate in how people are prepared to throw money away.

How about free ones?

"It’s just under a mile at either end " I would walk, no risk of bike theft less complexity, no road risk.

also, the best thing for avoiding oil on trousers is to roll up the leg, yes I know it looks silly but all trouser clips have left me with a oilmark

Not cheap but Spoke Chinos are good - narrow lower leg means they dont get caught in chains.  The ‘bulletproof’ have a higher back and are made of 3XDry so work well in light rain.  £15 discount code if anyone wants one (drop me a mail)

I wouldn’t bother getting the bike out for a mile

Depends on the train journey though, for a mile either side I'd use a bike for sure

I have a Brompton which makes it a no brainer, but depending on how busy the train is and what the exit is like either end I'd still consider a full size bike... It'll save you 20 minutes a day at least

I guess it would only 'save' time if the extra 10 minutes you saved by cycling meant you go an earlier train.

I'm 2 miles to the station and the bike is definitely worth it. Plus the bike ride is more 'exhilerating' than a trudgy walk, so makes the commute better.

I guess it would only ‘save’ time if the extra 10 minutes you saved by cycling meant you go an earlier train.

it all adds up, and the early train is also likely to be less crowded so easier to get the bike on to.

Thanks everyone! I managed to pick up some endura urban pants (actually - ffs endura, you're Scottish not American. They're trousers not pants) from tredz for about £30 a pair. I'll most likely but some of the other suggested too.

Mudguards - that's a good shout. Not sure I can fit mudguards under the pannier rack though - is a genesis io id frame. I'll do some googling.

And regarding whether it's worthwhile - it's a dull boring monotonous walk either end, so the bike should make it more fun. The train home is packed full though, so it may well be a problem getting the bike on...

Does this mean you'll wear the same pair of trousers every day at work??

No - not every day. I'll have a few pairs to rotate.
