Looking at possibly an Alfine type hub for low maintenance unless anyone can recommend something else....?

Cheers

Not going to recommend anything but it might help if you give some information. On road or off road commute? Do you need to carry much? Hilly or flat? Short 3 miles or long 20 miles? Urban or rural? Summer only or all year round? Do you have secured place to pick at work or on the street?

Yeah thanks, that would help - its a 10 mile round trip commute, fairly flat - mostly on road but with a few off road options but nothing too gnar! It's an all year round commute so would look to add mudguards. Secure parking at work.

Not sure there are too many alfine hub full build options, but i'm not sure why?

Do Genesis still do a Day One Alfine build?

I had an alfine bike. Bit of a faff to take wheel on or off and then tensioning was a bit hit and miss.

Was in constant fear of getting a puncture during the winter so ended up running schwalbe marathons which made the bike feel dead.

Probably better off with a 1 x system, perhaps with bar end shifter if using drop bars.

Pinnacle? If they still do them.

Or

And spend a few quid on 2nd set of rims?

I had an alfine 8 on a genesis ioid. Best commuter I have used in many ways. I used conti protection tyres so didn't get punctures but it is no great hassle to get the wheel out. There is s trick to removing and fitting the cable.

I'd have another alfine for commuting like a shot. They just work

Canyon Commuter 6

Alfine 11
Belt drive
Wingee extruded mudguards that don't rattle.
Dyno hub and Supernova lights (which are excellent)

needs a proper rack to carry panniers - don't even think about using the ones on the mudguards but apart from that it's a great bike for a 5 mile commute.
