Shortly followed by realising he still won a Silver medal and celebrating 😀

point of interest, upside down forks on number 12's bike

Noticed that at the start- I thought they would probably get ignored by the XC race crowd as they are a touch heavy but maybe we'll see more of them on the WC as they become more available? Hard to know who the RS1 is really aimed at as the marketing videos were very "lifestyle" focused rather than for any type of racing.

Brilliant stuff, Anton has been sick this year but is an amazing talent. He knocked over the karapoti race record when he was 13. Sam has had a great start to he year and they would have been racing hard against each other. They all ride their factory team bikes, bike nz which is a basket case only give them really minimal support and funding. Stunning g result though and I thought it was exciting.

Liked Gaze's reaction on losing the sprint. Not happy.

I think it was just a celebration that his country had won, but didn't quite look like one.

Good racing that, and for some reason I really wanted the Kiwis to beat the Australian. Might have been based on nothing more than the Australian kit.

Killeen? Kallean? killin? kallan? kullen, i'm so confused.. identity crisis looms for him when he watches that race back.

Been seeing a few at WC rounds this year. They look the same but guess we don't know if they are the stock ones or some new prototype version.

As a matter of interest, what bike was Liam Carling/Killeen/Killen riding?

Only asked as there's no team listed in the Nationals t'other week.

A Specialized Stumpjumper. Looked like the lowest spec bike to finish!

So, will they sing the national anthems?

Liam Carling beat Oli Beckindale apparently at the 2006 games according to the commentators 😀 Who can blame them for not doing their homework with no real English medal threats 😐 Would always be nicer to see more exciting young XC racers from the home nations. Great ride by the NZ and Scottish boys today though

I don't know about "more exciting" younger home nations riders, I'd settle for just faster 🙁

faster = exciting. This is XC racing 😀

Doesn't seem to be a lot of money or support in XC (not just the UK) so you can completely understand the fast youngsters being snapped up by other branches of cycling.

Cracking atmosphere at Cathkin today. Watched the women from mostly near the cross over point and the men from the spectator area with the screen down at the bottom of Mary's Drop(?). Was a lot easier to follow who was where with the tv coverage on the big screen! Was great getting a grin or a wave from the guys that were left on the last lap but out of contention for a podium, and the Jamaican guy gave us a massive grin and a wave on two occasions too. Think I've got hoarse from shouting encouragement 😀

My kids were watching the men's race when I got back from a ride of my own, and they were loving it. I asked them if it was dull to watch as that was an excuse used for not showing it on telly very often compared to road riding, and they just gave me that look that only a kid can give their father..... 🙄 😳

I was lucky enough to be there today. We rode the course after the race. It's a fair bit harder than it looked on telly. Best bit was Kenta Gallacher styling up one of the drops. One of the Kenyan women had rigid forks, the other was on flat pedals with reflectors (bizarre!)
PS Emily Batty looked great in a one piece lycra suit.

Just back myself from the event. Fantastic atmosphere. We progressively worked our way around 75% of the circuit and trust me...all these guys & gals were horsing along.

Oh, and Batty is even nicer in real life 😀

Yes she certainly is rosscopeco, I kept hoping she would crash and land on me, but alas I was sadly left disappointed. The racing was great and the atmosphere was immense. Not entirely sure if the tv coverage can do the course justice, I know the photos I took don't really give a good idea of the gradients. I wish I had taken my bike up for a go after the races. Oh well next time I'm going up to glasgow it will be with me I guess.

Couple of photos from today. Spent the whole time shouting at the Scots so didn't really get any photos of them, which was a shame.

Both races were great viewing and the last lap of the blokes race had me on the edge of my seat. The commentary was iffy but the camera work was spot on, albeit suffering from the F1 style ignorance of anyone beyond the top 6! The course looked a belter.

looks weird seeing it as a race venue after having done loads of laps myself since they built the track.

Off to watch it on Iplayer 🙂

good day out and some exciting racing.

One criticism i'd make is that the course could have supported a bigger crowd and its a shame that it was not generally known that you could watch parts for free.

Agree with that. Crowds could have been huge if they had detailed the fact that you could see most of the action for free.

Great day out especially the fact that all riders got a cheer regardless of country or race position.

Just caught the highlights thing on the bbc. A few minor issues, for instance there were no at all bikes in a lot of it- lots of crowd shots, extreme closeups of riders heads, pictures of trees. Just about everything was in slowmo or stutter shutter, it was like watching lifecycles. And there was basically no actual mountain biking, the riding shots seemed to be all processions of riders going along flat boring bits. Absolutely 'king awful. I know xc's a hard sport to televise well but it must actually be harder to do it this badly.

well you just put me off searching for the Oz-ified version to watch, saw the end of the womens and there was 1 shot if the technical bits and nobody anywhere near them on a bike. Looked a great course to televise though just putting cameras in the right places and hitting record when the racers came past would help 🙂

TV does "flatten" terrain, it is a twisty droppy course.

I would not bother Mike. The girls coverage was far more comprehensive. Boys race spent more time on Hockey and Shooting than on the bikes.

Got around to watching some of the ladies race on iPlayer after getting back yesterday to see what we'd missed. Reckon Northwind is a little harsh but they could of shown a lot more of the technical sections with a little less helicopter. It's fine for the TdF but a little annoying at an XC event.

The commentary was passable but some of the stuff was unintentionally hilarious imo. The constant references to the lefties, the comment about moving away from dérailleurs and how most recreational cyclists would be riding all mountain bikes and amazed at what the women could do on hard tails all made me chuckle.

Edit: Just noticed Matt's last photo has me taking the same photo from a different angle in the background, nice 😀

I was at the event yesterday.

I really enjoyed it, brilliant atmosphere, watched the coverage in iPlayer later too, the course looked brilliant on TV. Really nice to see trails I've ridden so many times being tackled by the pros.

The event was really well run too, the organisers had done a great job of clearing the area around the trails so spectators had lots of places to watch from.

The only criticism I would make is around the ticketing. The tickets were "sold out" but you could turn up and watch it without a ticket? 90% of the course was accessible to people without a ticket so why bother ticketing? Either sell more tickets or don't ticket it

Some of the commentary was a bit daft and dull but then I guess Rob Warner isn't BBC approved!

It did look brilliant.

Are there any interviews with the racers giving their opinions of the course?

My opinion.

It looked great, the course, the racing, the riders, the bikes, the crowd and the coverage. Commentary was iffy but you cant have everything!
I'm half English, half Scottish and have lived 15 years in Wales but found myself cheering for Cooper from the start. He's got some skills. No wonder he was so fresh for the sprit, he used half the energy that any of the others did to get through the tech sections!
The big disappointment for me was that Welsh Cycling sent no riders! Some big questions need asking there! Did they not know there was a MTB race happening?

Yes that is poor,

Jersey sent 3!

The Welsh might not have had any realistic medal prospect but its only up the road. Lesotho managed to send 2 riders!

I was talking about the short highlights thing they broadcast in the evening not the actual race coverage. Definitely not harsh, it was dire.

Ah, sorry, missed that part of your post! Didn't actually see the highlights. Real shame they didn't show any of the interesting bits!

If I had known yesterday I could attend without a ticket, I would have binned work and rode or walked up.

Was that only certain areas of the course that were ticketed, e.g. the grandstands?

I suspect that the ticketing was allocated more around the park and ride and access to the site, than what the site itself could cope with?

Anyway, the Commies are great so more than happy to cut the organisers some slack. The TT route runs close to my home so go [s]Wiggo[/s] Millar!

I suspect that's would of been the case. The start/finish area was ticketed, as were a couple of the other bigger features where they had big screens set up. I didn't mind paying for the ticket but the site definitely could of held more people and suspect more people of gone if they'd known it was mostly free.

The only part of the organisation that I would criticise was the bike parking situation and the lack of information on where the actual entry place was. We rode up from East Kilbride and no one on that side seemed to know where we needed to go to get in. That and the bike parking was a fair walk from where the tickets were being swapped for wristbands. But otherwise they did a pretty good job.
