Hi,

Tempted to do this (not the maxle version) but what dropouts do I need for a 2007 Meta 5.5? I think a spare one came with the bike but do I need two different ones compaired to QR?

Definately worth the upgrade. All you need is the dropouts, a 12mm axle and a compatible hub.

My Commencals (2008 Meta 5 and an Absolut 4x) came with two sets of dropouts - standard QR and a spare set of 12mm bolt through. The 12mm ones are a pair. Worth checking as some folk on here had 10mm axles with their Commencals.

I use a bolt up 12mm axle on the 4X but went Maxle for the Meta as it's tool free.

Thanks, the spare dropout(s) are back at my parent so i'll have a look next time I'm home. If I have the correct pair looks like a worthy investment for £35 ish including the hub conversion.

Not sure I can afford the maxle option.

the dropouts are always swappable over at the comencal oxners club forum.

I ran 12mm on my meta and it seemed stiff (never tried a QR though)

the alloy axles are cheap and light. I ran a 300g steel one 😯

What hub have you got? Pro 2 with the bolt-in or bolt-through is cheap to do and adds a little stiffness, if that's what you have (also doesn't snap axles)

Yeah got a Hope Pro 2 hub. Got a feeling the spare dropouts that came with my bike might be the 10mm bolt through one.

10mm bolt-through works in standard QR dropouts btw though they could make enclosed dropouts as well without the, er, drop out I guess. It's a relatively cheap way to try a bolt-through anyway, about £20 for the axle and 8 or so for a fat skewer.

You can have my maxle + drop outs for £45 posted!

I ran it with a Pro 2 hub.

You'll thank me when you have a puncture not having to get the tools out to get the wheel off 🙂

Send me a PM if you want pictures.

Above deal sounds good! I picked up dropouts for £20 and got a Maxle new from the US for £30.

The result is much better tracking, best I can describe is that the rear used to 'smear' when trying to ride ruts or obliquely at something. Much better with the maxle, I imagine the 12mm bolt up is as good, just needs tools. Don't fancy carrying a 17mm spanner on a ride in case the nut doesn't grip the dropout and spins...

Thanks for that gravity-slave - not after commission are you? 🙂

I've got spare unused QR and 12mm bolt through drop outs in the garage too, anyone want to make me an offer? Will get around to taking pics and putting them on the classifieds soon.

MRanger156, as standard the Meta came with 2 sets of dropouts, QR and plain (not Maxle) 12mm dropouts. Your spare pair will probably be 12mm.

Well, mine came with 10mm 'plain' dropouts!
Got 12mm maxle now - maxletastic!

Worth £65 for maxle as oppose to QR?

Bolt through rear does make a difference on these bikes but a lightweight alloy 12mm bolt through does the same job cheaper.
