Potential stupid question here. Flying to Spain with bike in a couple of weeks. Is it ok to carry standard CO2 cartridges in the hold of the plane? I’m cheap, so flying EasyJet.

Most airports/airlines allow 2 in checked bags.

I usually have them in hand luggage and ask at check in. Caa regs say they're OK but at the airline's discretion if I remember rightly.

I've never had them taken off me mind.

Normally fine, but I've been summoned back once checked-in to remove them from my luggage once.

I've always taken them out for North American flights.  Have been asked a couple of times to confirm as well.

Accidentally ad a couple in my hand luggage a few years ago. Customs were NOT impressed…

yes, I've just packed them in the bike box with my bike and kit - tucked in a shoe or similar. With no problems 👍

Because they're rigorously tested and rated, and traceable from a manufacturing point of view, for accountability and liability.
The airlines can't guarantee that all the different types and brands of CO2 cartridges are safe, so it's much easier (and potentially safer) to exclude them all.

I've taken a them on planes several times, always packed with the bike. Policy varies by airport AND airline but when I last asked the security agent checking my bike bag, they said a couple are ok but they'd stop anyone "bringing a box" of them onto the plane.

So, my takeaway was as long as it's (obviously) just a couple for personal use, you should generally be ok. I've used a couple of UK, European and North American airports/airlines, though I've not used Squeezyjet for many years...

But they are generally permitted, if you check the t&c's of the airline for hold luggage, some accept small canisters i.e for tyre inflation under a certain size, and in a separate section they accept much larger co2 cartridges for safety devices, such as lifejackets, motorcycle/equestrian air jackets, and those avalanche flotation bags.

My wife just went through this taking air jacket canisters, I pointed out they are much safer (strong steel and non flammable) than a relatively weak can of flammable deodorant.

As above... They're under each seat so THOSE ones are safe..

A mate used to work for Boeing, and they change the CO2 cartridges every X months... He gave us LOADS of them! I've still got loads!

Most airlines allow a couple but it's worth printing off the policy to have with you in case you encounter someone officious at the airport.

Checking in for a flight earlier this year to Gran Canaria a woman was asking all the people with bike boxes of they had any. I denied it (I had two and they got on OK).

Were they asking people to take them out or just asking because they had nothing else better to do with their time ?

I got a couple taken off me at Manchester a few years ago that had shown up on the scan of my bike bag.

Sometimes asked, sometimes not...I don't bother taking them anymore, just buy a couple over there and leave them in the bike room if they don't get used.

@FunkyDunc - I believe anyone who had them would have had to get them out and leave them. I'd checked the airline's policy in advance so didn't feel too bad about telling a fib. Didn't get asked on the way back.

Airline staff here - just check your airlines specific regs but they will generally allow a small amount per passenger.

As for 'just deny it?' Yeah, not like its serious, or breaking the law or anything.

https://www.gov.uk/shipping-dangerous-goods/rules-for-different-types-of-transport

Dont do that. There are rules for very, very good reason, and deliberately breaching them or claiming ignorance is not looked on lightly.

Don't put them in hand luggage at Manchester - I got surrounded by armed police when they saw them on the security scanner!  Had to hand them in!

By blowing through this nozzle. Tie the belt around yourself and secure with a double bow. A light will automatically illuminate on contact with the water. Don't you friggin listen ?? 🙂 🙂

They’re under each seat so THOSE ones are safe..

So if you forget yours, just nick them from the life vest? (I was joking, don't do this :-). )

I don't think it's like drugs - it's a safety issue!
