I'm setting up clipless for the first time. Ordered some Shimano AM5 shoes, they are a snug fit with just a bit of toe wiggle room at the end, but not tight up against the toe end. I'm assuming you want them fairly snug as your foot moves far less than with flat pedal shoes ? is this logic correct ? I'm a uk.11.5 and ordered Shimano UK12.

I think you're over thinking it, you just want them to fit like a pair of shoes. Not tight, not loose, just fit.

Shimano used to come up a bit small, go on the foot measurement size guide.

For Shimano shoes I normally go up a few full size rather than a half.

In new Shimano I take a 46, I'm a UK 10 or what is normally an EU44.

Shouldn't flats and clips fit the same way, properly. You might want clips a bit tighter if you like to pull up or they're extra stiff soled

tight spd shoes are a quick way to baltic feet.

as above normal fit, tight enough to not be loose, loose enough to allow you to wiggle your toes and not freeze them off.

I always recommend a comfy snug fit with your toes having about half an inch of wiggle room at the end. Sock thickness makes a big difference and your feet swell a bit when they get hot as well.

Shimano shoes are very narrow in my opinion, compared to regular shoes. In the past I've gone up 2 full sizes, which leaves them long on the toes but the correct width. In fact I've found this to be fairly common across all cycling shoes I've tried. Recently bought some Northwave in their Wide version and they fit perfectly, the first time I've been able to wear cycling shoes in my regular size.
