Well, seeing as I didn't get out tonight, I have instead spent a while looking at routes for future rides.

In the process, I just came across this and thought I would share. Sorry it's region specific, but I figure there are enough of us on here from one of the UK's finest towns...

If you are in this part of the world its worth keeping an eye on that website...its pretty good.

This turned up in Wales Online/Western Mail today as well http://www.walesonline.co.uk/lifestyle/fun-stuff/43-reasons-cycling-anywhere-wales-11080365

That Penheol Ely one is the toughest I've found. There's another good one which goes up to the top of The Garth via Mountain Road, really steep first bit.

Murder-mile is still the toughest climb around here.

None of those climbs come close to it.

I guess it's pushing it a bit for 'in and around' Cardiff, but this is one of the hardest I've been up in the area and/or ever: https://www.strava.com/segments/7367267

There's quite a few that side. And Murder-mile is the toughest.

And Murder-mile is the toughest.

Whereabouts is that?

This is a good one:

I found it on a ride, didn't know it was coming up. On the steepest bit I needed to stop, but it was so steep I didn't think I'd be able to stop the bike without falling over and tumbling back down the hill...

PS I've found that doing a couple of reps of this kind of climb flat out is an excellent quick workout. I use this one, Graig Road, cos it's nearby:

All quite good choices until he got to Rhiwbina Hill. Pfff, that's just the lump you pootle over to warm up on the way to proper climbs in the valleys 🙂

Graig road is a good one, also Blackvein Road over towards Cwmcarn, although bits of that are straying into 'barely a road any more' territory...

On a related note, Tuesday Hills will start up again for the summer in a couple of Tuesdays time...Meet at Rhiwbina Xroads at 1830 and I'll show you some hills. All comers welcome but BMI of less than 25 recommended 🙂

It's a what forum now?

OK then, in that vein: AKA cowshit lane

First half on tarmac, then just as you're getting knackered the rocky bit starts and the gradient goes up by a few %

That's a great ride - I can never make the right hand at the top of the quarry climb though - its always to eroded. Is the flat bit along top of quarry accessible now - it was impossible to get through cos of the security fence last time I was there (over a year ago)

Pfft!! ... cows shit lane is nothing compared to Cwm Fedw in Machen.

And then the Darren climb to Cwmcarn is even worse again.

It was open last night!

That right-hander's not too bad at the moment - the gully's filled in a bit.

@ Gwaelod. It was open last time I went up a few months ago. Its a right of way past the quarry the use the security fencing to separate it from the quarry traffic.
The r/h turn is pretty doable now, but the last l/h super steep turn that brings you up to the quarry is still a pig. I've cleaned it twice in dozens of attempts over the years 🙁

Just came down the Cefn Onn one aka the tennis courts about 30 mins ago. That's my local training loop, because it contains this

https://www.strava.com/segments/10516955

Because killing myself to try and get the KOM is pretty good training.
