We will be in touch
Recently got a boardman urb 8.6 for commuting to work, and I think it’s a great little bike for the money.. however it’s just developed a very loud and annoying click when pedalling.
It seems to be from the right crank/pedal and always when the crank is forward on the downstroke. Can feel it through my right foot and never through the left. Would it be as simple as the pedal bearing is shot? The pedals don’t exactly feel smooth when spinning by hand (It’s still on the flats that came with the bike).
Any ideas welcome, thanks!
Loose pedal in crank pedal bearing, bb bearing, loose crank, loose chainring/bolt
I've had all the above. Will probably be your saddle 😀
I've got a clicky ankle and an occasional clicky hip....have you?
No but my shoulder clicks quite loudly.. maybe that’s what I’m hearing!
Could be anything, I've a creak on my cross bike but can't be arsed spending ages finding the creak.
It's on its third chain, second bottom bracket and original chainring and cassette.
I'm going to ride the gears into the ground then replace all the following at once:
- Cassette
- Chain
- Bottom bracket
- Chainring
- Gear cable and outer
The way I should 100% cure the creak 🤞
99% chance its the pedal. Everything else can creak and click but i find saddle, crank bolts, stem etc are very different sounds.
The pedals it came with will probably be cheap nasties and if you use regularly wont last long.
Sounds like pedal is likely - put on a another pedal, borrow another pedal and test it.
This!
Will probably be your saddle
It's ALWAYS the saddle. Unless it's a frame crack.
What cranks?
Shimano Ultegra and Dura Ace can do this (changed the design in the very latest model). Essentially bonding coming apart which holds the two pieces of each arm together.
Classic clicking initially. I changed BBs, greased everything, swapped pedals and loads more until I removed the cranks and had a really good inspection.
Do the Nexus 3-speed IHGs have anything similar to the dots you were advised to line up through cable tensioning on the old Alfine 8-speed hubs? I have vague recollections of clicks from my old Pylon8 that were solved by lining up those dots.
If it’s the same place on every rotation, most likely the BB.
Rode someone’s bike the other day that had a pronounced click on the right hand downstroke. It felt like the pedal. But it remained clicky until the BB was changed.
Start easy….it’ll be your pedal.
I’ll borrow a mates pedals this weekend and have a play.
Not sure how much faith I have in Halfords building so I’ll give it a good once over and check everything else while I’m at it
New pedals seem to have sorter it. Love an easy fix!
Result !
Was just about to say I have had the exact same issue with my Boardman, just changed the BB but didn't fix the issue. Pedal change next (but will also give the headset bearings a once over too).

Thanks, @beagle, now you've got me worried. I've got Ultegra cranks and a click, sounds like it's from the drive side when the crank is at 2 o'clock. I've stripped and rebuilt the pedals, and the BB isn't that old. What should I be looking for on the cranks?
I'm at the 'replace pedal' stage of the click-hunt currently. Have already swapped BB bearings, crank bolts, stripped and regreased direct mount chainring, plus obviously serviced the existing pedal.
Have a google on line 👍 I noticed some of the bonding had come away and there were gaps joining the two halves of the crank together. Also noticed the start of small cracks
