[#738973]

I've just bought my first full suspension bike and was wondering what you knowledgable people do to the working parts of the rear suspension links in relation to lubing them once cleaned. At the moment, once i've cleaned it and allowed it to dry I then lightly spray the pivots with GT85. Not sure if this is good practice or not? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as i don't want to wreck the bushes by doing it wrong.
Cheers, MM.

It is a MOUNTAIN bike its designed to get muddy dont worry about it. Just lube the chain or you will spend more time and money trying to stop the bearings from going then you would just changing them every year.

I just clean the whole bike, without paying particular attention to the pivots, bearings etc.
Sometimes if I am feeling particularly anal, I might dry the main pivot bearings with a bit of kitchen roll, as the water tends to sit in the cup a bit.

Replaced my pivot bearings for the first time early this yr on an 8yr old bike. Never really paid too much attention to bearing maintenance. And this is on a Specialized that supposedly have crap bearings.

Don't spray GT85 (or anything) on your pivots. All you'll do is dissolve the grease in the bearings.

Rather than play a hose on the bike, use a bog brush on the fiddly bits and a sponge on the rest. As above, don't spray lube on the pivots. On bearings, it flushes out the grease. Bushings are generally designed to be self-lubing, so bunging gunk into them does not help. I found this once when working on a yacht mast - I sprayed WD40 on the main halyard sheave, only to be told by the owner that it was a self lubing one, which meant a trip to the chandlers and then a trip back up an 80 ft mast...

Seriously, spraying GT 85 or anything similar on the pivots is a bad, bad thing.

Echo this on my 04' Enduro. Light spray with Teflon lube every month or so & still smooth n' tight after 5 years.

If the pivots have bearings then GT85 will just flush it out. If it has bushes, than they're most likely made of Delrin, and again it's self lubricating. Make sure they're clean. If eventually the feel a bit grindy/noisy, then put more grease in.

Oh Bugger!!
Thankfully i've only sprayed a very little amount into them once. Will not be doing that again. The bike is a Cube AMS Pro and I believe the pivots are bearings. I'll be taking the bike back to LBS in a couple of weeks for it's 1st month check over so will get them looked at. I haven't the confidence or knowledge yet to look at them myself.
Thanks for all the info. I'm glad I asked.
