Is it OK to put my new (and now very muddy) knee pads in the washing machine?

Washed mine loads, has not harmed them.

do that every weekend with mine lob it in the mesh bag and give it a spin 😉 comes out looking clean...

30C quick wash with non-bio and no softener and they're fine...
