Just a general question, often you see nice old road bikes with chromed bits on the rear stays and forks, and i think I've seen it on some bikes on here also, mamadirts inbred perhaps?

Is it done by:
- Stripping the paint, prep for the chrome, dip the required bit + a little extra, then the sprayer masks the chrome and does a nice paint job. (spraying over the extra bit of chrome to get a nice edge? is paint on chrome possible?

- Or can you somehow mask of the frame to do the chrome on the required bits leaving the rest of the paint as is?

Cheers, Dave

You can paint over chrome I believe - might take an etch primer or special paint. Some old road bikes had a chromed frame with paint over the top - there was a Raleigh on here that was chromed with red paint faded in around the lugs IIRC. Someone stripped it all back and the bike was fully chromed.

Most old school Italian frames from the 80's were fully chromed and then they masked off the area they wanted to keep chromed and painted the rest.

A few years ago Columbus advised against chrome-plating because of the effect of hydrogen embrittlement on the tubes.
