I bought a Recon Silver coil fork new last week from Rose bikes, to fit along with some spare disc brakes to my wife's occasionally used hardtail.
I went out on it yesterday to bed in the brakes and had a fiddle with the preload adjuster on the top of the LH fork leg, and the whole top cap just came off in my hand! The top cap itself is supposed to be 12NM tight.
Naturally it uses a bolt size (24mm) I don't have a socket for, so I've had to order one to get it done up right - but this was potentially incredibly dangerous. A couple of twists of finger and thumb on the preload adjuster and the top cap and coil popped right out. Had that been a big compression on a ride, it would have been very messy. As it was, I was only half a mile from home, on road, but still had to walk back as getting the top cap on by hand is not easy...
