A mate has asked me the above question. Doesn't want to spend a lot on it. Basically just wants to cycle routes, save them and then be able to download to said device and follow them again. Doesn't have to have any cycling specific logs.. more a gps than anything else.. ?
Viewranger app on smart phone - you can save 'tiles' of maps, fund, share and download gpx for routes.
I also have a £8 black and white screen eTrex that lurks in the bottom of my first aid bag, I can always use that for accurate location, and with faffing upload routes, and with great ease track my routes. Runs off AA's for ever... Great but of old kit.
Garmin Edge 200 is pretty cheap because it's old but has basic routing via Garmin Connect. No mapping, but you can follow a breadcrumb trail.
Garmin Edge Touring is £120 with maps. You could get one of the cheaper edges or a Dakota, etc but you'll either just get a breadcrumb trail to follow or have to sort maps and mounts out in which case you'll have spent the same in time and money!
For mountain biking the Garmin Etrex is great and you can pick the Etrex 20 up off eBay for around £70
