I'm looking to use the 1000 for some long distance navigation come summer, a test run today of following navigation on a 55 miler / 3 hour ride with cadence, speed and HR sensors used 57% battery. So it looks like it wouldn't make a 100 miler it I stayed on the navigation page. (It's recorded a 7hr /100miler before but I didn't have the map constantly refreshing as I knew the route)

What options are there for charging whilst in use. I've got a velo pebble I use for the phone, will that work or will it switch it into the same mode when connected to the pc?

Should work fine, it was the 500 which switched to PC mode as soon as you plugged it in. Not tried first hand, but need to do so as I've got some long rides coming up too.

i used one of these the other day, for 200 miles, following a route, with HRM and Power data, Garmin 800 was still on 100% when i got home after 13 hours,

only issue was with the connection end that plugged into the garmin coming loose, every so often it would say external lost, but then reconnect straight away

Thanks chaps, reckon I'll do a test run first see what happens and make sure it doesn't corrupt the data,

And yep a dynamo hub would be nice, but that's more money but it is planned for the future.

A couple of issues if your 1000 is anything like my 510

1) The battery percentage is usually waaaay off the mark.
2) There are loads of settings which can vastly alter the battery life, the main one being backlight.

I have a 510 (very similar to 1000) and use a external battery without problems. I did read somewhere online that the unit won't charge if its below 0C but this is not true, mine charged for my whole 6.5 hour ride at -25C to -15C.
The only thing I did was turn the backlight down when I plugged the charger in as it goes to maximum and this will use more power.
I also turned off bluetooth as I wasn't using live track and had no phone signal where I was riding.
Hope this helps.

Njee20 - I believe there are chargers ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gomadic-Portable-Battery-Pack-Garmin/dp/B0041L0NG0/ref=aag_m_pw_dp?ie=UTF8&m=A3PSKEB89MZ5CS) you can get that will work with a 500, I only found this out after I bought a 510, though my wife does like the live tracking option.
