[Closed] Changing road bike brake cable inners only

[#1223411]

I've changed the brakes on my road bike and the cable is a wee bit frayed at the end. I can still get the cable crimp on but the cable looks a bit untidy and I'm picky about things like that. I want to change to black cable inners anyway. It’s all purely cosmetic but things have to look good.

The bar tape is in good nick so I don't really want to change that. I could try peeling the tape off but it's fizik microfibre stuff so doesn't look like it'll come off without ripping.

So has anyone had success changing the brake cable inners only.

should be able to do it.
if you disconnect the cable at the caliper end and pull on the brake lever, you should expose the nipple(!) hiding within the lever body.
you should then be able to wheich it out without much grief.
if you're using a new cable with a nice tidy soldered end it should then slink back in no probs.

Cheers eck I've ordered some cables and I'll give it a go. Might try attaching a very thin piece of wire to the existing inner then using that to pull the new wire through.

Yeh good point cynic-al, if only it hadn't come from a man who was prepared to get a frame stripped and polished because he didn't like the colour.

Easy enough, same as described above.
Where are you getting the black inners from?

I was never getting it polished, dumb-ass.

Nice to see you follow my threads more closely than I can remember them!

No problem traildog as I haven't tried it yet, just thought it may be tricky getting it round the bend on drop bars.

Not at all cynic-al, it's quite easy to click on your username and see your posts then click on the first one that may show a hint of ‘anal vanity projects’. To be honest I never thought I’d strike such a rich vain.

I only want black inner cables, it’s not as if I’m going to bead blast, weather, semi polish and try and distress them or anything. That would be going way too far along the anally retentive line.

Sorry I should have said ‘semi-polishing’ or ‘part polishing’.

Maybe you should think before posting inane comments. Don’t get upset over it though.

It's OK to have a house as an anal vanity project though, eh?

Normal, the duel ones are in need of a polish.

Well done! I'd have a look myself if I cared. I guess I just don't see why perfectly good functional parts should be thrown out for black ones. The frame is the most aesthetic part on a bike, which makes it differnet in my eyes.

Don’t get upset over it though.

I can promise you I don't.

Do you live in a s**t-hole?

Where did I say I was throwing them out? I'm less anal about my commuter so will probably use them on that.

cynic-al you've been shown to be an anal vanity project whore and that is a fact. I can't believe someone who considers a clean supply for a hi-fi criticises anothers attention to detail.

I'll ignore your racialist remarks.

racist remarks? Where?

Bead-blasting an ugly paint job is a million miles from replacing brake cables for diferent coloured (hang on, was that me being racist again?)

And if you knew anythig about hifi you'd know a clean power supply is the most important thing to have.
