As above really. Why? Is it just preference? Or is there a mechanical reason as to having the drive components on the left.

Cheers!

it's used in BMX for people who grind on that side (obviously you can't grind if your chain is in the way).

Other than that, its been used on fixies just to be different, and on some folding bikes becuse it was easier to package.

do you mean on BMXs? it protects the drive train for those who prefer to grind on the right

Why would you have it on a track/road bike then?

often found on adverts/posters where they flip the image and forget that it will put the drivechain on the wrong side

I tried it once, but didn't like having the handlebars behind me.

its a why not thing.

yu have to use specific cranks though as the pedals would unscrew if you fit them back to front.

My pet hate that, photos that have been inverted. There's a big one in the Drop Off Cafe at Afan, I think the bloke may be on a Rocky Mountain, but it's clearly a reversed image, with his drivetrain on the left!

A certain magazine *ahem* did that on their cover, once...

Easy to do on a fixie, but you're unscrewing the sprocket with your pedalling force, so you're relying on the lock ring to keep it on (which is probably a bigger problem than the pedal threads mentioned above).

Sheldon Brown did it on one of his bikes, I think.

Must be images being flipped as if it involves mechs I can#'t see how they could do it easily unless the big S is producing left side mechs etc.

BMX is easy as they've been around for a while (plus I've ridden with the guy who came up with the idea ๐Ÿ™‚ )

But if you did that, the weight of the Lefty AND the drivetrain on the left hand side would make it unstable! That's why Cannondale designed it as a Lefty, y'see, not a Righty.

True story.

it is an excellent way to shift a very stuck fixed wheel sprocket. Done it.

Would you not have a problem with the direction of the freehub as well?
