Whats the formula for a double and bash with a short cage mech to get the chain length right?

What he said-same for ant mech. Chain may be a bit slack in gears that only the stupid use.

If it's just too short to go into "big and big" it's perfect ๐Ÿ˜‰

Do you mean short SHORT, or short "medium" (like XT etc)? If it's the latter, you should be fine, as you're only running a double - and chain length as per the other 2 replies.
If it's short as in road cage short, you may want to run the chain a little shorter and be aware of your crossover gears (ie big chainring/ big sprocket)?
