I am in the process of building up a cyclo cross bike which I will swap from road to cross use with the minimum of effort.
I have 46 and 50 tooth outer chainrings that I would like to swap over (the inner will stay 38 all the time).
Can I get away with the same length chain for the 2 chain rings - if so, do I set the chain up for the 46 or the 50 (or somewhere in the middle?
Thanks

I'd set for the 50 and use a longer cage mech to take the slack when the 46 was on there?
but a bigger cassette range may mean no need to change front rings (albeit it with bigger gaps between cogs)?
