sorry.. another roadie thread

Does anyone know of chain gang style training rides in Bristol? The thing i'm lacking from training is some brutal fast pace group rides to sharpen things up during the week.

I heard one goes from the nova scotia on a tuesday night but not sure if it's still going.

yup still going strong. Be warned tho, that is a fierce ride with them boys.

Various other options available if you look hard enough.

+1 - not for the feint-hearted, and you may well be fending for yourself in the event of a mechanical/not keeping up!

Not done it myself but have heard it is tough. Not sure about Wilier but the odd Rapha rider might turn up.

If you ride Cat 2, you should be ok ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'd love to be 2nd cat but i'm a lowly 4th (started racing this season).

The only road races that I can find are 2/3/4 which are much faster paced than the 3/4 I did.

trickydisco there is usually a ride heads out from Strada cycles on North St, also a few of us generally ride about 30-40 miles on a tuesday night if the local trails arent so great. Starts off fairly steady but usually pick up pace after half hour or so, ending in the usual bunfight etc. BUT it might still be a bit easy if you are at a higher level. Drop me a pm if you are interested, bear in mind we are mtb riders on the road tho!

A bunch of fast looking types head out of a Wednesday morning, about 9-10am or so, from the bench outside the sus bridge public conveneiences. No idea if they're on a sociable training ride or a chain gang as I only ever see them setting off.

The Scotia one is survival of the fittest - basically try and hang on till you either drop everyone else or get dropped - it's unashamedly elitist with the pace kept deliberately high and no attempt to wait for people (in fact, quite the opposite it's about trying to drop people). It's brill though and it's not actually as bad as it sounds in that there's usually various other stragglers to ride with if you do get dropped. Best make sure you know roughly where you are though...

Good training.

This is what i want/need. I did my 1st 2/3/4 race the other week and the pace was incredible from the start. The 2nd cats shelled a load out and drove the pace up to split it up. I managed to stay with a group of 5 for about 5 laps before i got dropped on a climb.

This was very fast for 5 laps and this is the type of training i need.

What sort of pace are we talking? Are you doing your turns on the front? Is there any paceline stuff or just taking it turns?

It's really good - I used to do it when I was at uni and it was great if you managed to make it the whole way round. My first wasn't so good - got dropped going up Dundry when I didn't really have a clue where that was and took me about 2 hrs to get back to Clifton from there in fading light.

Yeah, proper organised paceline when I did it. Everyone took turns or got stick (good natured I hasten to add) if they didn't do it long enough ๐Ÿ™‚

I should add that it's 10 years since I last did it but from what I've heard recently it's basically still exactly the same.

Its the "elite" of local riders. Fred Baker Boys etc... Mostly racers at 2nd cat or higher and as said its hang on till ride over or you get dropped. They can average over 23mph for2 hours or more some nights, and that includes a few hills/lumps around Burrington etc. It also aint as friendly as it used to be and has been described to me as a "war" in progress.

My mail is tonyatoutriding will be out tomorrow night most likeley

You almost certainly will get dropped but that's ok - it's still a good training session.

3 miles? jeez

What was the av speed? My average speed for castle combe is around 26/27 but then that's with a massive headwind and it's very very easy to stay in the main group.

Road races have been a bit lower but i was holding 24/25 for a few laps (on the flat)

Not Bristol but there's a similar ride that leaves Cadence in Bath on a Sat morning - up to 3 groups, first 9.15 then 5-10 min intervals. 43 mile lumpy loop out Sodding Chipbury way with prime on the Common.

Aim is the fastest groups catch the slower near the end but all the groups ride 'fast' chaingang/paceline/through and off 19mph first group, 22mph for the second/third group..

Just found this post again ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank god I haven't been dropped yet but it is a great training ride. Good mix of riders and doesn't appear to be that elitist.. There's a a mix of riders mostly elite/1st and 2nd cat raodies but also an elite mountain biker.

Severn RC wednesday nights at Aztec West - uses the business park for laps so if you get dropped no issues.
