Due to a lot of chain clatter on downhills, I want to fit a chain device and double and bash to my Genius 40. However, am I going to be able to fit a chain device on, due to the odd derailleur fitting on the Genius?

By odd do you mean it's a direct mount mech?

Seeing as double and bash specific chain guides only have the lower roller i would imagine you should be okay. Although if it is a direct mount mech you may not have enough adjustment up/down on it to accomodate a 36 tooth middle ring (if you're not just sticking with the normal 'triple' chainset middle ring)

I was going to stay with the original, 3 ring, mech for the time being, then change to a dual mech when I have the spare cash...
The derailleur mounting is a bracket onto the BB, rather than mounted on the frame, not seen one like that on any other type of bike!

Thats an 'E-type' mount i believe.

It may be worth looking into whether or not Shimano's SLX Dual specific mech is available in the 'E-type' model. Thats a great mech as the cage is shorter as it doesn't need to accomodate a 44 tooth ring.

I had a genius, it uses a bracket which is effectively a spacer on the bottom bracket (E-type mech)

If you have a second spacer in there already then a chain device mounted on the BB should be fine replacing the spacer - otherwise you could just wang it on with the mech and see how it rides if there isn't a spare spacer on there. Not sure what impact putting what is effectively an additional spacer on the BB will have other than widening the pedals by a few mm. You'd have to tweak the mech limit screws to realign the mech - otherwise I'm not sure there are any negatives.

BUT I'm not expert and its not something I've done.

Plus I wouldn't worry about getting dual specific mech - just don't shift into top.

Thanks Bushie - my only real reason for the different mech would be for the shorter cage that would be less likely to rub on the chain, but in the meanwhile I was going to use the original and just tweak the adjustment screws so I can shift onto the big ring (which will no longer be there!)
I'll take a closer look and see if there's a spacer on the BB, and check out if the dual derailler is available in the e-type style...
