Is it OK to de-base a chain with petrol rather use a proprietary chain cleaning product?

I would say yes but be careful.

If you use Gunk or Petrol it will clean everything out of the chain and it will have no trace of oil at all.

So as long as you lube it after then you should be okay.

Please, for the fire risk you are looking at, use parafin instead.

diesel works well. the dirt sinks to the bottom so you can then decant the diesel and re-use it.

Paraffin is your weapon of choice if you don't want to stump up for a proprietary (read expensive) degreaser.

IMO this is the only way to be sure you have removed all the grit and muck anyway.

Personally, I found diesel and white spirit to be below par compared to proprietary degreasers such as Finishline ecotech.
