Right, this evening I started building up a scandal with some bits from my C456 and quickly ran into trouble cos my idiot brain couldn’t undo a new fangled stealth bolt-through; go figure. Then, I’ve added a freshly degreased 11-42XT Cassette onto a Novatec 11speed Boost hub, nipped it up, and the bloody thing wobbles fore and aft quite a lot - certainly more than I’ve seen before. Now, I have two sprocket spacers on this cassette which perhaps I’ve put back between the wrong sprockets? Perhaps I’ve lost a sprocket spacer during cleaning and their should be three? Does the hub need a spacer of some kind before the cassette? I think the previous owner of the frame had a 10spd shimano cassette on it so I don’t see why this would cause me aggro. Have gone to bed in a huff.
Do the spacers have any raised bits?
I know some have little raised bits that match with holes in the sprockets and if you get it in the wrong orientation then it can push the cassette out of whack.
No I don’t believe so. Pretty much flush.
I had no end of trouble with a new 11speed cassette.
I didn't have the correct spacer.
Spacer should go behind 11sleed cassette as 11speed Shimano cassette is narrower than a 10speed Shimano cassette.
Fine, but the hub says 11 speed on it and the cassette has come from a hub on my other frame which I don’t remember seeing a hub spacer on it?
I had this a while ago and pretty sure it was a spacer behind the cassette for me that fixed it, of course your PITA might be different ... good luck whichever.

You need a 10-11spd (1.85mm) spacer behind the cassette.
This happened to me on a new XT 11-46 cassette, which was a like for like swap on a boost hub. It was something to do with the alignment of the spacers between the smaller sprockets. It just took a bit of patience building the cassette up on the hub and checking each stage.
is it the cassette or the freehub moving. I just replaced the bearings on my crossmax's freehub as they were shot to pieces and there was a ton of play in the freehub.
Make sure the smallest sprocket is proud of the end of the freehub, if it isn't, or very close, you need another spacer on first.
As above, after cleaning my cassette and replacing could detect a wobble. The outer bearing on the freehub was shot. Ordered two but only replaced the outer one as the inner was perfect.

If the hub says 11s on it, the freehub will be long enough for a Shimano road 11s cassette, a shimano MTB 11s cassette is the same length as a 8/9/10s cassette, so requires a 1.85mm spacer fitted behind the cassette.
Your other hub was probably a standard 8/9/10s freehub.
I have this problem with a 12speed SLX its driving me mad!! its if the spider is bent and the lower end seperate cogs are all fne. WOuld post a video but cant figure out how.
No the hub is pretty much brand new. I’ve just taken my cassette off a Superstar Fuel Hub and put it on the new one.
It’s spaced enough that the lock nut goes one nicely and sits flush.
So, do we think a 10 to 11 speed spacer between the hub and cassette?
This is the hub. Clearly shows a spacer but it’s a 9-speed spacer?? Bloody annoying.
Yes you need a spacer. 9 speed is the same width as 10 speed and 11 speed MTB. That spacer would do the trick. Its spacing the freehub to the 9 speed width which all the others (10/11 MTB) also fit with.
Thanks Nixie. So a 1.85mm spacer for a shimano cassette or can I maybe whack a bottom bracket spacer behind it?
It’s a bloomin faff. But LBS to the rescue who have shimano spacers in stock for £2.
I've just tracked a wobbly cassette (gears skipping) to disintegrated bearings in the freehub
All sorted. Well done to everyone who said spacer before cassette. Was actually a 1mm spacer. LBS were grand, charged me a quid, so I bought a new water bottle to appease my guilt.
